There are four main things to look at when evaluating a trainee: age, height, potential, and skills.

Age*
The age of a player may very well be the most important element when trying to determine whether or not to train them. There will always be exceptions to the rule but the ideal age to train a player (from scratch) is when they are 18 and fresh out of the draft. The reasoning behind this is that the younger a player is, the faster they will train. With each year that a player ages their training speed will slow down. The most widely accepted theory by BB managers is that training slows down at an exponential rate as opposed to a linear one which is why it is so important to train players when they are still young. In a situation where you are training or attempting to train a national team player it is recommended to train a player into their mid twenties. This would not hold true for an average skilled player as the extra pops would not have the same value they would have on an already well-trained NT player.

Height
In general, inside skills train the fastest if a player is really tall, and outside skills train fastest if a player is really short. Extreme heights can help generate extremely skilled players in specialized areas. If you are planning to do significant training both for inside and outside skills, perhaps to make a SF, then an "in-between" height can be good. Here are some rough estimates of mine for height guidelines:
Pure C: 6'10"+ (the taller the better)
PF: 6'7" - 6'11"
SF: 6'3" - 6'8"
Guard: under 6'4" (the shorter the better)

Potential
The potential of a player doesn't affect training speed, until the player approaches the soft cap associated with their potential. When this cap is reached, training virtually stops, although it is possible to continue to train very slowly. In effect, a player's potential is a limit on how good they can become one day.

Starting Skills
In order to be worth training, a new trainee needs to have pretty good starting skills. A salary of $3500+ might be an ok guideline, but that's very rough, and each player is a different case. In general, one thing to consider heavily is skill level in main areas. It's really good if the key skills for a trainee are already at or near respectable to start. If the player has any major holes (say, atrocious passing for a guard), then you need to think about whether the hole(s) can be fixed (sometimes the answer is yes, sometimes no). It's also really good if the player has secondaries that you like, since these are hard to work on. If you can start out with a PF trainee with respectable JS and OD, for example, then that can be a huge advantage.

What affects training?
Training is affected by numerous things such as trainer level, height of player, number of positions being trained, level of the skill being trained, how close the levels of the main skills are (elastic effect) and the number of minutes played that week in the training position. Age is also a key factor.

The height of the player affects training speed for different skills. Skills such as rebounding and other inside skills will train faster the taller the player is. The shorter the player the faster he will train in outside skills such as outside defence, handling and driving.

How does potential work?
Potential acts as a cap on training. Different potential levels cap out at different skill levels. So an MVP can be trained longer than an Allstar potential player. There is a rough salary estimate corresponding to the cap for each potential level. Once the skill set of a player reaches a particular point (The soft cap) that is equal to the potential level of the player, training really slows down and it becomes ineffective to train the player anymore.

0 Announcer: < 6k
1 Bench warmer: < 8k
2 Role player: < 13k
3 6th man: 15-18k
4 Starter: 26-30k
5 Star: 45-50k
6 AllStar: 60-80k
7 Perennial allstar: 95-140k
8 Superstar: 140-220k
9 MVP: 215-315k
10 Hall of famer: 500k+
11 All time great: 1M+

The above is a rough estimate of potentials and where they cap at. Note that centers are generally capable of attaining a higher salary than guards.

Training by Position

Each training type gives you an option to choose how many players you want to train and at what positions. However, the positions trained gives limited options and generally correlates with the skill that is being trained. An example of this is how rebounding can only be trained at the C/PF positions or for the entire team (team training). As the manager of your team you have the option to do one position training, two position training, three position training or team training. As you just saw with rebounding, not every skill gives the option for one position training. The other two training types that only offer two position training or more are driving and jump shot.

Here’s a breakdown of each training option:

One Position Training
Description: Will give a player the most training possible in a given week. The negative to one position training is that it is only possible to give a maximum of three players full training in the week. This is the most common training option for managers who are interested in quickly developing a few key players. It is necessary to consistently use this training option if you wish to train a NT player.
Max players that can be trained in a week: 3

Two Position Training
Description: Will train a maximum of six players at roughly 75-80% (estimate) of one position training. Like most things in this game, the training formula is not linear so don’t be afraid that two position training will only give you half the training of one position training. This training option is probably the most common in BB and is generally used when a team has a small squad (5 or 6 players) of prospects that they want to train.
Max players that can be trained in a week: 6

Three Position Training
Description: Allows a manager to potentially give 9 players full training in a week. However, this training option is rarely used as most people find that the training speed is much too slow. If I had to make a guess, I’d say three position training gives a player between 40-50% the amount of training that one position training gives. I’d only recommend this training option if you badly mess up your training minutes for the week or you’re interested in experimenting with the training formula.
Max players that can be trained in a week: 9

Team Training (specific skills)
Description: This is the option to train every position in a specific skill (Let’s say jump shot) which is not to be confused with the team training option on the training type drop down list that offers you the option to train stamina, free throws or game shape. To put it very simply, never ever use this training option. It is extremely slow for all players involved and is a very ineffective way to train.
Max players that can be trained in a week: 15

-*-*-*- FAQ -*-*-*-

What is the difference between one-position training and two-position training?
One position training allows you to give a maximum of three players full training each week. Two position training allows you to give a maximum of six players full training each week. The difference between one position training and two position training (besides the number of players that can be trained) is that players that receive one position training will improve slightly more than players that receive two position training. Some say that two position training gives each player about 70% of the training of one position training, but you get more players training so it may be worth it for your team.

Position Breakdown

One of the more interesting debates you can find around the BB world pertains to what skills are best for each position. In this section I will give you my opinion on what the best primary, secondary and tertiary skills are for each position. While there may be many managers who agree with my philosophy on what each player needs most, keep in mind that this is very subjective and only you can make the final judgement on what’s best for each position. At the end of this section I will also throw up a couple links that will take you to pages where managers have attempted to do what I have. It’s always nice to know the opinions of more than one person. Anyway, on with the show!

The skills are listed in rough order of importance.

Point Guard
Primary Skills: Outside Defense, Passing, Jump Shot
Secondary Skills: Handling, Driving, Jump Range
