Non, le meilleur bouquin écrit sur le rock. Devenu une référence, mais jamais traduit en français. De toute façon, il le massacreraient probablement à la traduction.

Ceci dit, oui, c'est plein de vieux. Déjà, le bouquin date de 1989, donc il serait difficile d'y voir des morceaux des 20 dernières années. Il avait rajouté 101 titres en préface d'une nouvelle édition sortie en 1999, mais seulement sous forme de liste, sans commentaires.
 
En fait, ce bouquin détonne au sens où :
 
- Il ne s'agit pas d'un classement, mais d'un énumération qui lui permet en 700 pages de redessiner l'histoire du rock & soul (l'ordre des morceaux est d'ailleurs subordonné au propos). Donc c'est pas un concours de zizis.
 
- C'est axé sur les singles et non les albums. Donc ça fait moins "culture", "âââârt", toussa. Pas d'alibi culturel style Miles Davis au milieu de la liste pour montrer qu'on n'écoute pas que de la musique populaire. Pas les 2 ou 3 pauvres albums de pre-war blues qui montrent qu'on a le sens de l'histoire (le plus vieux morceau du bouquin est de 1951).
 
- C'est axé sur les singles et non les artistes. Donc rien à carrer du statut de légendevivanteoumorte d'untel ou unetelle. Si quelqu'un n'a fait qu'une seule très bonne chanson dans sa vie, il peut figurer dans le livre (même si évidemment certains apparaissent plusieurs fois).
 
- C'est le "rock & soul", parce qu'il considère que la séparation musique noire/musique blanche est artificielle. Donc c'est plein de noir(e)s, au lieu des quelques-uns habituels saupoudrés entre ZZ Top et les Doors.
 
- C'est plein de morceaux d'avant 1965 (425 exactement).
 
- Y'a pas "Imagine". Ni "Stairway to Heaven".
 
- Y'a rien de Pink Floyd, de Queen, des Doors et du Velvet. Alors qu'il y a 7 morceaux de Sam & Dave et 5 de Costello.
 
Outre le bouquin lui-même, qu'il faut évidemment lire pour comprendre ses choix, un type a fait un site entier avec des tris dans tous les sens (par songwriters (30 morceaux écrits ou co-écrits par Eddie Holland, ce qui en fait le plus cité), par label (Atlantic largement plus présent que les autres avec 82 entrées), par année (1965 la plus dense avec 78 singles listés), par artistes (Aretha et Marvin 1ers ex-aequo avec 17 titres chacun), par ordre alphabétique d'artistes etc. http://www.lexjansen.com/marsh/

Et pour finir, Marsh a été le 1er à employer le terme "punk rock", en 1971 dans Creem (à propos de ? & the Mysterians), il a été directeur de publication chez Rolling Stone avant de se faire virer pour déviation de la ligne officielle des rock-critics, et a été un certain temps membre important du staff du Rock 'n' Roll hall of Fame, dont il a été également viré pour ses choix insuffisamment consensuels. Il a en particulier été accusé d'être responsable de la sous-représentation d'artistes de prog-rock dans le Hall of Fame. Un homme comme je les aime.   Ah et puis il est plus ou moins le biographe "officiel" du boss, dont il est un proche depuis ses débuts, et dont il a épousé la co-manager (Barbara Carr).

- une dizaine de Temptations et des groupes à Spector
- et puis cerise sur le gateau strawberry fields des Beatles
(partial moi ? affirmatif et quoi d'autre ?)

Je me suis arreté de lire à  28. Van Halen - Jump  

forcément, ses meilleurs albums sont sortis après 1989

C'est une liste de singles.  

Van Halen a au moins un morceau potable, vu que c'est la reprise des Kinks.

En plus d'être la soeur de Lily Allen.

Le premier VanHalen a pas trop mal vieilli, des trucs comme Aint Talking 'bout Love ça le fait encore.

Nope. Mais il y a déjà tellement de bons bouquins sur le punk que je ne pense pas le prendre.   Par contre, celui-ci est sorti hier :
 

 
Je l'ai mis en vitrine le matin, il est parti en début d'après-midi. J'en ai recommandé 3. Beau livre à 54 euros, avec une tonne d'iconographie commentée par les Clash eux-mêmes (quand on parle des membres du groupe, on peut dire "les"   ).

Comme je suis aventureux de nature, je me suis promis d'écouter Cut the crap prochainement. J'ai hâte.

"This is England" est excellent. Le reste de l'album, euuuuuh... mieux vaut oublier.

Ya beaucoup de monde dans les festivals. Pourtant, les grosses "têtes d'affiches" passent pas ou très peu en radio terrestre. Pourquoi ? Il semble avoir un public

- Je pense que le public "festival" reste très minoritaire sur l'ensemble de la population (contrairement au public NRJ qui va peu aux concerts ?)
- Dans cette minorité, beaucoup écoutent des albums directement et n'ont pas tellement le besoin d'avoir une radio
- Dans cette minorité, il y a déja plusieurs autres minorités différentes (rock, hip-hop, reggaedubchansonfestive)
- Une radio reggaedub à but commercial, c'est la mort des chevreuils

- Parce qu'on s'en fout de MBV.
- C'est tout (+ ce qui a été écrit dans le message précédent).

Style différents n'implique pas forcement public différent

Ya déja le Mouv', Nova, Ouï FM et les radios locales, au fait
 

Le public reggaedubchansonfestive ne me semble pas le même que le public rock / hiphop indé (qui eux peuvent (parfois) se confondre). A ma connaissance, hein.
