LONDON (MarketWatch) -- European banks fell sharply on Tuesday, as worries about the economic health of several Southern European countries pulled the sector down again. Credit Agricole /quotes/comstock/24s!e:aca (FR:ACA 10.72, -0.34, -3.03%) shares fell 2.9% in Paris, Santander /quotes/comstock/06x!csan (ES:SAN 8.90, -0.37, -3.95%) shares were down 3.8% in Madrid and National Bank of Greece /quotes/comstock/13*!nbg/quotes/nls/nbg (NBG 3.20, -0.06, -1.84%) shares fell 4.8% in Athens. The Stoxx 600 index declined 0.9% to 258.20, extending early mild losses, while the euro lost 0.5% to trade at $1.3133 against the dollar.
