FAQ
Before we start. Questions concerning specific cars, tracks and race series cannot be answered. These are all licensing issues that we are not prepared to discuss at this time. We hope you understand.
We have split the questions into four sections to make it easier for your to find a particular point.
There are more questions being asked all the time so we shall answer these and do another FAQ when we have collected another batch. We apologise if your question did not make it into this FAQ.
Please note that we have answered these points based on the current stage of the simulator. Some of these answers may be subject to change as development progresses.

Limited Edition Packs.
Some people have expressed that they do not agree with limited edition expansion packs. Personally we like the idea and have had many people express an interest in the idea. There are many people who either like to be a little different or who simply like to collect rare and unusual items and it for these people that these packs are intended. For those of you who simply wish to purchase cars and tracks for the purpose of racing there will be versions of these same card and tracks available for you also. We believe in leaving the choice up to the individual.
Ways of paying other than by credit card.
There are many of you who have asked us to consider other ways of paying for Racing Legends that does not involve a credit card or giving out personal information on the Internet. Firstly can we say that we will be introducing security measures to make it has safe as possible to use your credit card. However we are currently investigating all the possibilities for payment and will implement as many of them as possible.
Beta testing.
Possibly the most frequent question. We will be implementing a beta testing programme and everyone who is interested will get the opportunity to become involved. More news on this will be posted on the website, so please no more emails asking to help beta test
)
The Forums.
The forum attracted a lot more interest than we had anticipated and with not being available over that first weekend it seems to have taken on a life of its own. We have started to deal with the forum by adding more categories and will be assigning moderators to keep an eye on it for us.
A little note on forum etiquette while we are on the subject. Can we please ask that all members show respect and courtesy to their fellow members. Please remember that everyone is entitled to his or her opinion. One of our main objectives with Racing Legends is to introduce a whole new audience of racing enthusiasts and drivers to the world of sim racing and it does very little to attract these people when they see members squabbling in the forums.
If anyone has an objection to something they read on the site could we request that you ask us first about it before speculating in the forums. This should save you time and hopefully prevent some of the rumours.
When can I buy Racing Legends?
Right up there with the beta testing question. The simple answer here is that we are currently not prepared to give a date. Doing so immediately brings tremendous pressure that is not conducive to creative flow. When we are 99% about a date we shall announce it. This way we do not give people false hope and cannot be accused of letting anyone down. We are however dedicated to getting Racing Legends to you as quickly as possible.
Is Racing Legends WSC?
No. Racing Legends is an entirely new product and one that no publisher is interested in for the reason that it is too specialised.
What happened to WSC?
If you wish to know anything further about WSC please can you refer your enquiries to Empire Interactive.
News by email.
It has been requested that we have a news by email service. We are looking into this and hope to adopt it shortly.
Sound
Sound is very important to us in Racing Legends. No-one has fully captured the incredible experience of standing next to or sitting in a powerful racing machine as it starts up and blasts away. A lot of thought has been given to ways to make the sound in Racing Legends as realistic as possible.
Can we make the website easier to read.
Happy to oblige. The website will undergo a slight revision in order to make it more legible
Can we get some West Racing clothing?
A lot of people have expressed an interest in purchasing some of the shirts, polo shirts and fleeces that we had at Goodwood. We will be making these and more available, after some redesign, and news of this will be on the website soon.
Will the cat be in Racing Legends?
One or two have requested that the white cat, that has had his nose stuck to the web-cam for so long, feature in Racing Legends. We shall indeed include the cat but it will be up to you to find him.
What is the name of the cat?
The cats name is Spooky.
Is there anything that can be done to help?
We do have plans for those that wish to offer more than their moral support. News of these will appear on the website soon.
What cars and tracks will be in the initial release?
This will be dependent upon the dreaded licensing issue. Whatever cars and tracks we can obtain the rights to and get modelled by the initial release will be included.
Will we be releasing editors?
Yes.
Will each expansion pack have a unique serial number (chassis number)
Each car when installed is given a unique chassis number and a logbook. These stay with the car throughout its racing life and records the cars history. We are very keen in Racing Legend to develop a degree of pride of ownership concerning the cars. Giving the cars a history will hopefully make drivers feel some form of bond with the car and this should help make for less incidents during online play.
Cars with histroy also opens up the possibility of trading cars that have a pedigree, for example an online World Champion may decide to sell the car in which he won that championship. We know there are people that will not be at all interested in buying a car simply because it has a successful history but likewise we know there are plenty that will.
This will also make it possible to have online events similar to the recent Goodwood Festival of Speed where successful cars and drivers can battle it out on specially made cirsuits.
How is Racing Legends funded?
Racing Legends is currently, and has been for some time, entirely self funded.
Will there be different versions of Racing Legends?
No.
What Rally era will Racing Legends simulate?
All eras eventually.
Will there be a karting expansion pack?
Not immediately but it has been considered.
Will all Racing Legends cars and tracks be available on E-Cards?
All official cars and tracks will be available (as well as on regular CD?s for those whose machines cannot read E-Cards.)
Will pit crew and mechanics need to buy the full version of Racing Legends?
Currently the answer is yes but it is a good point that we shall think long and hard about.
Will there be a driver ranking system?
Yes. We are investigating the best way of implementing this.

Will I be able to walk around the pits, paddock and track?
Specific feature requests.
May people have requested that a particular feature be included or excluded depending upon taste. We have chosen not to exclude any particular feature from Racing Legends and instead will leave it up to the league organisers to choose which features they allow in their particular league. This will then give the choice to the player. They will be able to choose a particular league to race in that most suits their requirements. For example one league may allow you to race from outside the cockpit and turn off all damage whereas another may require you race from within the cockpit with full damage and state that the car you start the season with must be the same car that you finish the season with.
Will there be joystick control?
Yes. We are fully aware that a product such as this will be the subject of many a homemade steering and pedal set-up. With this in mind we are making the controller code in Racing Legends as simple and as flexible as possible to make it easier for everyone.
Will there be Australian cars and tracks?
G?day to all our Antipodean friends that want to see some of their home cars and tracks we have not forgotten you. We have many friends down under and some of them would never forgive us if we didn?t include certain tracks and cars in Racing Legends. And you know who we mean Jon Crooke.
Will there be A.I. in Racing Legends?
Yes.
Will you be able to add turbo chargers to normally aspirated engines?
It hasn?t actually been done yet but the system is there to allow it.
Will Racing Legends feature road cars?
We hope so. Again licensing rears its ugly head once again. Our primary interest is with racing machinery but do have a list of classic and modern road cars that we would dearly love to see in Racing Legends.
Will Racing Legends feature driver injuries?
We do not intend to simulate any injuries to drivers, marshals or spectators. We do not feel this has a place in a simulator.
Can we produce our own skins ?
Certainly. Each new car will come with a layered version of the included skin. For those readers who are unfamiliar with PC 2D paint packages a quick explanation. Each skin for a car in Racing Legends is created in Photoshop and is made of layers. Each layer contains an element of the skin be it the base colour, decals, panel lines etc. This should make it a lot easier for individuals to customise the car to their own tastes. For those who not naturally artistic there will a resource area on this website that will offer a selection of badges, logos, nuts, bolts, rivets etc. which can be used to embellish you work.
We shall also be preparing a series of tutorials to assist people in the car, track and texture creation process.
Can we include a team manager mode and allow hiring and firing of personnel?
No. There is no need. Teams can appoint real managers if they feel the need and the responsibility of managing the team will be a natural one and not something that we need to be involved with.
Once teams start to include 2 or more drivers, a pit crew, mechanics, engineers etc then there really will be a need for a team manager to keep them all organised.
Will there be a career mode?
Again no. Our theory here is that if you want a career in Racing Legends then have a real one not a simulated one. We hope and expect that there will be many online racing leagues to cater for all tastes and levels of skills, some just for fun and some offering prizes.
It is a dream of ours that Racing Legends drivers, as in the real world of racing, will be able to work their way up through the ranks and eventually compete at the highest level attracting sponsors and competing for World Championships.
Can Racing Legends support point-to-point tracks as well as circuits?
Certainly.
Can Racing Legends support street circuits?
Yes, tracks with more than one route are not a problem.
Can Racing Legends simulate different road surfaces?
Absolutely. Marked and subtle surface variations are a very important aspect of Racing Legends.
How many cars will be visible at any one time?
This will be entirely up to you. Depending upon the power of your machine you will be able to choose to display the whole field or simply a selection.
Can we design our own helmet and drivers?
Skinning your drivers? helmet or racing overalls will be very straightforward.
What features are planned for the initial release?
This will be decided during the beta test phase. Please bear in mind that the initial release will be the subject of further free upgrades and patches.
Can Racing Legends support multi class racing?
Yes.
Will it be possible to edit our own engine sounds?
Yes.
Will you be able to see un-purchased cars during online races?
Definitely something we would like to happen but there are complications. There are a number of different methods for dealing with this that we are considering. More on this as we develop the ideas.
Will there be a spectator mode?
Yes. Non-participating drivers will be able to look in on online races.
Is it possible to stall the cars in Racing Legends?
Absolutely.
Will there be lap distance, lap time indicators during races?
We will be including a whole range of on screen information for those who wish it. It will be up to league organisers to decide what information will be allowed in their leagues.
Will cars actually sink into gravel traps?
Yes.
Will the tyre walls be soft or hard?
Soft.
Will there be wind in Racing Legends?
Yes.
Will we be able to recreate the unreliability of certain cars?
Not really feasible. The reliability of a car is not a factor of the car itself but the components used there in and attempting to recreate the reliability of each component in a car is not practical.
Are we still using the Staccato system for engine sounds?
Yes we are still working closely with the Staccato people and their excellent software.
Will I be able to walk around the pits, paddock and track?
There will be a free move mode that will allow you to walk the track
Limited to start with but will expand it ?.

Will Racing Legends support all graphic cards?
How many buttons and axis will Racing Legends support?
Will you be able to communicate with your pit crew during a ace?
Will there be an X-Box version?
What will be the minimum machine specs for Racing Legends?
Difficult to say at this stage, as we get more advanced we will have a much clearer idea.
Will we support Tracker IR?
Another interesting piece of hardware and we can see no reason why it can?t be incorporated into Racing Legends.
Will Racing Legends support real dials and gauges?
A number of people have directed our attention to hardware that allows real dials and gauges to be driven from within software. This is used a lot in the flight sim community but has yet to be adopted into racing sims. We very much like the look of these products and will be passing the necessary values from Racing Legends to support these devices.
Will online play require broadband?
No but obviously broadband offers many more possibilities.
Will Racing Legends support dual processors?
Yes.
Will there be a Mac version of Racing Legends?
We shall not be developing a Mac version ourselves but have been approached by a number of Mac developers who have expressed an interest in converting Racing Legends for use with the Mac.
Will Racing Legends work on a Linux platform?
As with the Mac question we do not have plans to make Racing Legends work with Linux but we have had offers to do it for us.
Can Racing Legends support multi monitors and 3d glasses?
Yes.
Will Racing Legends support all graphic cards?
Racing Legends will support all Direct X8 and above compliant graphic cards.
How many buttons and axis will Racing Legends support?
As many as you want.
Will you be able to communicate with your pit crew during a race?
Devices such as the Roger Wilco offer the perfect way for drivers to communicate with their fellow team members and we will be supporting these devices.
Will there be an X-Box version?
No. We are focussing purely on the PC platform.
Rumours and Concerns.
Points and questions in this section.
Charging for online play!
We are going to charge for all expansion packs!
Only 1 car and 1 track in the initial release.
Price?
Project too ambitious!
Licensing issues.
We will be in competition with the community!
What assurance can we give that it will actually happen?
How do we verify that what we doing is authentic?
Will I still be able to buy Racing Legends if I don?t live in the United Kingdom?
If I download a new car or track do I still get a CD?
Can I have expansion packs on a regular CD?
Charging for online play!
No idea where this one came from. We have no intention of charging anyone to race online using Racing Legends. The league organisers pack that was mentioned on the website is purely a suite of programs designed to make it easier for those wishing to start an online league and help them provide a better service.
We are going to charge for all expansion packs!
Some confusion here that needs to be cleared up. We do not intend to charge for every expansion pack. If it is a feature that you would normally expect to find in a racing simulator then this will be offered as a free patch for download, features such as weather, damage, replay etc. Complete new functionality or major feature updates will cost and the price will depend upon the complexity of the pack. As an example a one of the packs planned is an advanced aerodynamic and wind tunnel feature. Many people will not be interested in this but some will, it does not detract from the simulator if you choose not to buy it but it will add if you decide to, again we leave it up to the customer to decide.
One of the main reasons for choosing to go the route of releasing the core of the simulator and then adding to it was that it allows us to give you access to the simulator months before you would have done had we decided we needed to have all features in place before releasing it.
Only 1 car and 1 track in the initial release.
Some more confusion here. It was mentioned at Goodwood that there would be only one car and one track to start with in Racing Legends. This was referring to the initial beta test version of Racing Legends and not the release version. This will come complete with however many cars and tracks are completed at the time of the initial release..
Price?
There has been some concern that the cost of Racing Legends will make it unobtainable for some people. Unfortunately this will be the case and we apologise to those individuals who feel it is not fair to price it beyond their reach. The simple fact in this case is that we plan to make Racing Legends the absolute best that it can be and it is also a fact that quality usually comes at a price. It would be a little like us writing to Ferrari and requesting they might perhaps reduce the price of a new 360 Modena in order that we could afford one.
We appreciate that we will lose a certain amount of custom but hope that those who do try it will not feel cheated.
Project too ambitious!
There are concerns that the whole concept is just way too ambitious and not achievable. This was another important reason for choosing to go the route of an evolutionary product. This allows us to break the project down into much smaller components with easier goals. As has been said the product you will get on day one will be just a hint as to the product it will have developed into say, a year after launch.
Licensing issues.
We currently do not have any official licences for any cars or tracks for Racing Legends. The reason for this being, until very recently, we have not approached anyone to ask for any. It is futile to walk into any meeting to request the use of a car say until you have something to show that will mean you will be taken seriously.
So currently no licences but it is something we are working on.
We will be in competition with the community!
We are doing our best to encourage the editing community not compete with it.
What assurance can we give that it will actually happen?
None that will satisfy everyone. All we can say is that this is our dream and we have a lot more riding on its success than anyone else.
How do we verify that what we doing is authentic?
The only real way of achieving this is by testing and letting those who have driven the real things have a go and get their feedback. The maths and physics involved in Racing Legends are the same as used in dedicated professional tools and that, we feel, is a good start.
Will I still be able to buy Racing Legends if I don?t live in the United Kingdom?
Naturally. Different language versions of Racing Legends are something that we will be investigating.
If I download a new car or track do I still get a CD?
If it is not a free download, a patch or upgrade then you will also receive a CD.
Can I have expansion packs on a regular CD?
Yes, you will be able to request this option when you buy the pack.
