United in 25M striker link
Manchester United have launched a 25 million bid to sign Parma's prodigious talent Alberto Gilardino, according to reports in Italy. While rumours persist that Sir Alex Ferguson is targeting Everton wonder-kid Wayne Rooney, it could transpire that United will turn to another up-and-coming striking sensation. Parma's cash crisis could necessitate the sale of the exciting forward, even though chief officer Luca Baraldi claims Gilardino is not for sale. The Gialloblu appreciate that the Under-21 striker could help ease their financial worries if an auction is sparked for his signature with Real Madrid, Valencia, Juventus, Roma and Internazionale all admirers. Italian sources claim Juve have reopened talks with Parma in a bid to sign Gilardino, but United may be in pole position because they are keen to negotiate a double deal. The Red Devils are also pursuing Under-17 forward Giuseppe Rossi and, even though he does not yet have a professional contract, Parma do not want to lose the teenager without receiving financial compensation. Ferguson has already signed Alan Smith from Leeds United this summer but, despite the Old Trafford club insisting they are now happy with their squad, there are expectations among the FA Cup winners' support and the media that at least one big-name signing needs to be made before the 2004/2005 campaign kicks off.
