In 2002, we had an economic slowdown; 2007 and '08 was worst, because the debt was so much higher. Let's assume we get out of that one, one way or the other. Then the next one at the end of the teens, the beginning of the Twenties, will be worse still, because the debt will be so much higher, so by then, the US will probably be bankrupt, just as the UK was in the mid-Seventies.
