Microsoft a tapé très fort sur sa conférence, renouveau de la XBox ?

The green laser-lights danced over the crowd at the antiquely hip Orpheum Theater in downtown Los Angeles. Please, no flash photography at any time, the anonymous, deep-voiced announcer boomed to the crowd. A hush settled over the audience. What would Microsoft unveil in the very first press conference of the show? What were Microsoft's plans regarding Xbox? Would the company address the problems plaguing the system in Japan? And what about Halo?
A whole lot, as it turns out, as the rookie console gaming company kick-started its presentation with strong numbers supporting the Xbox' performance, then moved on to an impressive-looking lineup of current and future games before turning its eye to what it considers the future of gaming.

With the help of some strategically-placed teleprompters, an adoring crowd lit up the old-school theater with applause when Robbie Bach, Microsoft's Senior Vice President of Games stepped onstage and immediately launched into bold italics, claiming Microsoft was beating Nintendo and Sony in several categories: third-party software sales, European rate of sales, and launch figures for the first five months on each platform.

Surprisingly, the Chief Xbox Officer immediately addressed the system's performance in Japan. "A year ago, people said Japan would be a tough launch," Bach confessed. "And they were right. Patience and humility are important in Japan."

Bu he went on to exhort that the company is, "in this business to make a difference. And we are in it to lead."

Supporting this proclamation, Bach cited the company's plans to spend over 2 billion dollars on Xbox support and development over the next five years, and the over 300 games in development (200 of which are slated for 2002 release), and the technological superiority of the box, an assertion Xbox Vice President Ed Fries quickly latched onto.

"Exclusive or not, every game looks and plays better on Xbox," the VP of Game Content for the system declared. He went on to highlight three of their newest titles: Blinx, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, and fanboy favorite Panzer Dragoon Orta.

Microsoft and the ranks of development houses also have a lot more in the works for Xbox gamers. A virtual carpet bombing of games covering just about everything outside of turn-based strategy titles flickered across the giant screen.

Updates of classic games from other platforms were the highlights. Ninja Gaiden, is shaping up to be a 3D action adventure that would do justice to its Nintendo predecessor. Crimson Skies, the arcade flight sim, Counter-Strike, the online shooting sensation, and Unreal Championship, the ultimate Unreal, are making their way from the PC to the Xbox. The N64 barn-burner Turok is also taking a new turn in Turok Evolution. Heck, even the immortal Mortal Kombat is rising from the dead to knock heads in MK: Deadly Alliance.

Of course, now that Sega has backed out of the hardware business, Xbox gamers can look forward to a lot more software...more wild driving action in Crazy Taxi 3, more zombie blasting in House of the Dead 3, and even more 3s in their sports series of games with NFL 2K3, NHL 2K3, and NBA 2K3. In addition, the Genesis-era duo Toejam and Earl will make a bow in their 3rd action adventure game. Shenmue II, sequel to Sega's acclaimed Dreamcast hit is also prepping for launch this winter.

However, plenty of new was announced with the old. Peter Molyneaux's pet Project Ego is a sword-fighting adventure that promises to adapt to the player more fully than any other game with character development that parallels your own wishes. And of course, what platform would be complete without a Buffy the Vampire Slayer game? Certainly not the Xbox.

The attending crowd got a glimpse of all these titles, appartently a sample of the goods in development for Microsoft's upstart system, and the lengthy list of titles under development is impressive. However, it's not about one-upmanship, at least according to Microsoft itself.

"Our challenge is not about competing with each other," Fries stated. "It's about taking gamers to new levels. Our challenge is to raise game design to an art form. And take it further."

The company then threw down the console gaming gauntlet by announcing Xbox Live, a single-stop ISP and gaming service for the system. At $50 for 12 months of initial gameplay and the Microsoft Communicator headset, the company appeared fervent in its desire to rapidly acquire more online console gamers than the competition and leapfrog Sony.

The Redmond giant is betting huge on broadband. Citing a statistic that over 50% of Xbox owners have broadband internet access, Xbox General Manager Jay Allard declared that Xbox Live is, "a play for the future." Blond-haired 33 year-old Allard went on to lash out at Microsoft's competitors by comparing narrowband, 56.6k gaming to "sucking pizza through a straw."

Allard went on to say that Xbox Live will go into public beta in early June, with a worldwide launch in Europe, Japan, and the U.S. this fall with Phantasy Star Online, NFL Fever, and Rainbow Six, with over 50 multiplayer titles to come - including Valve's Counter-Strike and some kind of multiplayer version of Halo.

When Editors React

What did the editors at CGW, EGM, and Gamers.com think of Microsoft's big press conference? Listen up!

George Jones, Editor in Chief, Gamers.com: Microsoft is smart - they came right out and addressed the biggest problem the gaming press has fixated on: the system's performance in Japan. They then quickly dispatched Nintendo with some choice statistics. Then they hammered away at Sony with loads of talk about the technological superiority by the developers themselves.

The online plans: interesting, but hmmmm...we've seen this before. Smart to launch with an Unreal game. Expect mad rumors about Counter-Strike leading on Xbox and not on the PC.

Wil O'Neal, Tech Editor, Computer Gaming World: I think the Xbox Live is dope - people want an easy way to connect to their friends. A single name to play under is fantastic...it makes things so much simpler.

Microsoft's games look really good, which is cool. I don't play GameCube much, but Xbox seems to skew a little older, which is perfect for me.

The clapping and revival-like attitudes scared me. The teleprompter said applause, and that was a cue for the Microsoft people to get stoked. The whole pedantic nature of some of these console people is frightening. It's just a game box - and it's all about the games.

Also, the fact that the company had the first press conference of the show was a good thing. Everyone is bitching about the Xbox on Fat Babies, but here they're really talking it up. The truth is somewhere in between, which is probably a good thing for Microsoft. You can't doubt the technology.

James Mielke, Assistant Editor, Electronic Gaming Monthly: I thought that the Xbox showing was a lot better than I anticipated. All the games that Microsoft had been showing before E3 had been pretty mediocre, to be honest. But with the announcement of Phantasy Star Online with the voice-communication headset, the exclusive availability of Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive X and Dead or Alive Beach Volleyball, I got pumped. And then you have Panzer Dragoon and even Blinx...the Xbox definitely has a lot of promise.

Shane Bettenhausen, Assistant Editor, Electronic Gaming Monthly: The games that impressed me were Counter-Strike, Star Wars Galaxies, and the announcement of Halo 2 online. It makes me feel like Xbox is going to be a lot stronger in 2003 than in 2002, especially Xbox Live. Microsoft's online service sounds like a good deal, but the line-up doesn't seem strong. I think the Communicator could actually hold it back, especially in the role-playing games. Hopefully they announce a keyboard soon.

I thought it was really interesting to hear about Counter-Strike and Galaxies. But the whole time they were going on and on about how original and exclusive the platform's online gaming would be, I kept wanting to insert the phrase, except for the PC. I'd love to know who all the ringers were up in the gallery cheering on cue.

E3 2002: Halo online plans

Jason Jones, Bungie's lead designer, says the Xbox Live version of Halo will return to the original concept the studio had for Halo's multiplayer.

At its pre-E3 press conference this evening, Microsoft revealed that an online version of Halo is in the works. Jason Jones, lead designer at Bungie, was one of a number of developers that Microsoft had speak on the potential of Xbox Live, and he mentioned that with the service, it'd be possible to "build the part of Halo that Bungie wanted to do." Given these comments, we can remember back to the original multiplayer plans Bungie discussed for Halo.
After Microsoft acquired Bungie in 2000, the game's development turned to focus on the single-player experience. However, back when the game was slated as a PC first-person shooter, Bungie had ambitious plans to develop cooperative team-based multiplayer for Halo. At this early stage, Halo's multiplayer was to feature combat between terran and Covenant forces on a massive scale, and players would be rewarded for taking specialized roles such as driving and flying vehicles for teammates. The Halo world itself was envisioned as an enormous world that would allow seamless transitions between environments.

This online version of Halo won't be one of the games to ship at Xbox Live's launch this fall, and Microsoft hasn't yet discussed specifics on the first-party Xbox Live games. We'll have details on the Halo online game as they become available.

Compte rendu IGN : Blinx révolutionnaire ?

E3 2002: Microsoft's Press Conference
The mighty Xbox let's the cat out of the bag along with Counter-Strike, Ninja Gaiden and another Halo.

May 20, 2002 - Microsoft made several moves to steal the early thunder as the company kicked off the 2002 Electronic Entertainment Expo with several new game announcements and the unveiling of Xbox Live, the Xbox's online gaming service at a live presentation at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles. Roughly forty Xbox and Xbox Live games were featured in the 55 minute presentation and that crop of games was highlighted by several newly announce games that should keep Xbox owners occupied throughout the 2002 holiday season and well into 2003.
Once members of the media, retailers, marketers and all other interested parties made their way to their seats, they were treated to presentations by Chief Xbox Officer, Robbie Back, Xbox General Manager J Allard and Microsoft Games Studios chief Ed Fries. Among the dozens of Xbox titles featured during his presentation, Fries made it a point to mention several, heretofore unrevealed games on their way to the system. IGN will have more information on all of these titles as E3 rolls on throughout the rest of the week, but for now feast your eyes on the future of Xbox software and the list of Xbox games mentioned at the presentation. Keep in mind some games are still under working titles and are subject to change.

the next version of a game that rhymes with J-Lo and is made by Bungie (online with Xbox Live)
Ninja Gaiden
Half Life: Counter-Strike (online Xbox Live)
Psychonauts
Blinx: The Timesweeper
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic
Tork
Midtown Madness 3 (online with Xbox Live)
Phantasy Star Online (online with Xbox Live)
Splinter Cell
Project Ego
Star Wars Galaxies
Brute Force

Dead or Alive Extreme Volleyball
Tao Feng: Fist of the Lotus
Steel Battallion
Panzer Dragoon

NBA Inside Drive 2003
NFL Fever 2003
Quantum RedShift
ToeJam & Earl 3
Turok Evolution
Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance
Kakuto Chojin
This is by no means a complete list of Xbox games but rather the cream of the crop mentioned specifically during Microsoft's presentation. Here's a little more on some of the games that stood out.

Blinx
Read it now and believe it -- Blinx is a revolutionary platformer. Not just for the platform genre (he's more than just a cat with vacuum cleaner and his name isn't Luigi), but for videogames as we know them. Blinx takes the Xbox hard drive and more or less makes it function like a Tivo or Ultimate TV system. Play is recorded using around 200 megs of hard drive space. When you die, the game rewinds in front of your eyes to a point where you can start again. That's not all Blinx can do, though.

Players will be able to fast forward, record, rewind, and stop time to assist them in their quest. For example, a barrel falls off a roof. You pause the game, then hop on the barrel and rewind the game, allowing you to ride the barrel to the top of the roof from where it had fallen. The title character in Blinx is not affected by the shifts in time, and can move independent of the affected environment.

Not only is the application of the hard drive in this game an amazing innovation, but has the looks of a second generation Xbox game. Created by Sonic/Nights game designer Naoto Oshima for his Artoon development house, Blinx should be bolting, as you read this, to the top tier of most wanted Xbox games.

Ninja Gaiden
Break out the champagne, old school games are on the way to an Xbox near you. Along with Sega's Panzer Dragoon Orta, Tecmo's Ninja Gaiden is being revived for Xbox. It appears the game is using the DOA 3 engine, but as a full-fledged action adventure game. Featuring blood, murderous sword strikes, and some crazy ninjitsu, Ninja Gaiden should be on everyone's 2003 wishlist.

Star Wars: Galaxies
Announced this week, Star Wars: Galaxies is headed to Xbox next year with full online capabilities. Galaxies is a massive online world (or rather world) based in the Star Wars universe centered around episodes 4-6. Players will be able to choose from variety of creatures, including wookies and ewoks. Not only that, but players will have the choice to join the Rebel Alliance, Empire, or kick back and be a moisture farmer. Let the waiting begin.

Tork
Move over Captain Caveman, Tork is in town. Not set to ship until 2003, Tork is an unexpected surprise. Made by the folks who brought you Rayman, Tork isn't your standard cromagnon. With the ability to morph into other forms, Tork will have plenty to do in his first adventure. The little caveman can into a Yeti, armadillo, and a flying squirrel among many others. Tork's journey isn't confined to a prehistoric world. Tork travels in time to places such as the age of machines and beyond.

DOA X
Mentioned so quickly that one could easily miss it, DOA X is the next in the Dead or Alive franchise. There are no details on this game currently, but it can be expected sometime in 2003. Good to know Tecmo is hard at work on the next in the series.

DOA 3 Extreme Volleyball
Yes, you read that title correctly. DOA 3 Extreme Volleyball features the girls of DOA 3 in bikinis playing volleyball. What better sport to match the bouncing beauties of everyone's favorite Xbox fighting game. Hitomi, Kasume, Tina, and Christie are all there, jumping around and whacking balls. Best of all, they really love to hug in between serves.

Psychonauts
While kicking it at psychic summer camp, Raz comes across a dastardly plot. Children are being kidnapped and their brains stolen. Yoink! To solve the case, Raz must leap into the minds of others, battling their nightmares. Though the title won't hit stores for a while, it already shows serious promise. Created by Tim Schafer, Psychonauts promises to offer striking visuals and unique gameplay.

Tao Feng: Fist of the Lotus
Not to be confused with Kakuto Chojin, Tao Feng is a 3D fighter filled with beautiful locations and dynamic lighting. Two ancient clansmeet on the battlegrounds, a true battle between good and evil. The fate of the world hangs in the balance, and the success of one clan over the other depends on your fighting abilities. Featuring plenty of interactive elements in each environment, Tao Feng could be the choice over Kakuto Chojin.

Shenmue II
Ryo's back on the hunt for sailors in the sequel to the popular Dreamcast game. AM2's "FREE" game is twice as long as the first, with more fighting and QTEs (Quick Time Events). Those who haven't played the first need not fear. That was like Star Wars Episode I, useless prelude to the true adventure. A summary of the events from the first Shenmue will be presented at the start of the sequel. For those looking for a good, involving story, Shenmue II is the route to take.

Counter-strike
As if there's not enough strategic combat goodness, the ridiculously popular Counter-strike is headed to Xbox online in 2003. What updates will be added from the original PC version are yet to be disclosed. Still, just knowing Counter-Strike is coming creates a warm fuzzy feeling in our tummies.

As we said the next version of Halo (MS won't even refer to it as Halo 2) will be online but the company was not forthcoming with any details beyond this. This title of course drew the biggest cheers from the assembled crowd with Counter-Strike, Ninja Gaiden and Star Wars Galaxies splitting second place honors for the biggest ovations. Tecmo's take on volleyball featuring those oh-so-endearing women from Dead or Alive was the game that caused people to drool, shift in their seats and adjust accordingly. There was drooling with Star Wars Galaxies, but certainly no adjusting.

Beyond the multiple bomb drops of game announcements, the Xbox braintrust pointed to past successes of Xbox as well as financial plans for the future in their effort to reaffirm the strength of the company and the platform The first European sales figures from Microsoft were announced with the company claiming 500,000 units sold in that territory along with an 88% attach rate for the all-powerful Halo. That's 440,000 copies of Bungie's breakthrough first person shooter for those of you slow on the math. In fact, Halo was leading the pack of top selling Xbox games along with the four other titles that sold more than 500,000 copies. All tolled, the Xbox could boast more than 20 titles that have seen sales of 100,000 copies or more compared to the ten 100,000+ titles for the GameCube over the first five months of each system's US run.

IGN will have much more on Xbox for the rest of its natural born life. We'll be updating this main Xbox Press Conference story throughout the day as necessary so check back often.

Carte d'arcade de Sega : System X : basé sur la Xbox ? Probable, vu le nom ...

Sega Developing System-X
7:43pm 05/17/02

Sega has confirmed plans to develop a new arcade platform entitled System X. Scheduled for release in fall 2002, the hardware will be targeted at retail stores such as WalMart and Target. According to Sega representatives, System X will be based on existing technology and will be aimed at casual players. Specifically, the architecture will be cheap to manufacture and maintain, thereby making it even more appealing to the nontraditional outlets. While a definitive game lineup remains undisclosed, Sega plans to sell the platform globally. Unfortunately, it's currently unknown whether the System X will factor in Sega's E3 plans next week.

Les gros titres exclusifs : Star Wars : Knights of the Old Republic (RPG par BioWare), Brute Force, Panzer Dragoon Orta (impressionnant !), NFL Fever 2003, Unreal Championship, Ninja Gaiden (beat-them-all utilisant le moteur de Dead or Alive 3) et Project Ego.
