Hi all,

Just got back from seeing my Grandfather. I first showed him the layout of the cemetery that I'd found online and then also a picture of the cemetery where you can work out which gravestone is his Grandfather's but can't actually see the writing on it. I then showed him the picture that Shitan took for me.

The main reason I thought about asking around for pictures about this grave is that it was my Grandfather's birthday yesterday, he's getting very old and has been doing his best to collect and document as much of our family history as possible, unfortunately out of his 4 grandchildren, I'm the only one that is interested in listening to his stories.

I don't have the exact information here with me but if I remember it correctly, Sergeant Robert Ritchie was killed by shrapnel from an artillery shell when attempting to liberate a village in your region of France. Sadly due to the nature of that war it was impossible to bring all of the bodies home so he was buried at the cemetery in France, and his parents erected a memorial stone in a family plot at a cemetery in Scotland. My Grandfather was able to visit that memorial when he was younger and lived in Scotland. It was only in the last 3 or 4 weeks that he found the information telling us that his grandfather had actually been buried in this cemetery in France.

When I showed him the picture he got quite emotional and told me everything he could remember about his Grandfather. He was extremely happy to see the picture but more than that, he told me he was so grateful that so many people who have no ties or attachments to our family would be willing to go out of their way to assist us and he asked me to write the following on his behalf -

"I have to thank you for your help in finding my grandfather's grave, I never had the chance to meet him myself but I can find comfort in knowing that his final resting place is in such a beautiful country, surrounded by such friendly people"

I would also like to extend my thanks to this community, especially Shitan for going out so quickly to get the photos for us. It's nice to be able to connect with my grandfather and hear him share his stories of the family history. It's rare that he smiles these days so that was nice to see.

You are great people and I am so grateful for your help.
