Details: There are many titles (site still coming up, but it looks like 1034 - no joke) that will be on sale for the entire sale. However, do not be fooled by their seemingly low prices! Many of those games will go on sale for even less as a Daily Deal at some point before this sale is over!
Daily Deals are the real crazy sales this time of year. In particular, there will be a new indie game bundle every day (as leaked here by CoffeeEdge), and as CoffeeEdge says, most of these packs will sell for $5, which is a lot of (generally great) games for a very low price!
Any non daily deal you buy may end up being a lot cheaper before the end of the sale, so in general, the best strat is to buy daily deals as soon as they pop at 10AM PST / 1PM EST (in case the mad rush leads to CD key exhaustionsee-below ), but otherwise wait until the very last day when you buy the pile of games you want that never had a daily deal.
*from-above The only caveat to this strategy is that there is some chance that Valve may run out of CD keys for non-Valve games before the sale is over, so you may still want to buy any games you absolutely cannot live without on the first day, knowing that it's quite possible you'll miss out on getting it cheaper later.
Budget: The 12 Indie Game packs alone would set you back $60, with (totally guessing) another $30? for the Potato Pack, you're looking at $90 on those alone if you want them all. If you grab another 10 games for $2.50 each, 5 games at $5 each, and 2 games at $10 each, you'll get a wallet breaking $160. That's about what I have set aside for this sale (from XMas bonus/gift money). I recommend you set up a similar budget for yourself now before it's too late, and you're stuck living on instant noodles until March.
Don't even pretend for a second you have enough willpower to resist all the deals that are about to be thrown at you. Just make sure you have a budget in place so you don't overspend and regret it later.

Last year, some Christian asshole wished me a "Merry Christmas." I immediately pulled out my air horn and honked it in his motherfucking face before he could even finish saying "Christmas," and then I beat the shit out of him with my hardcover copy of the The God Delusion.
I then spent Christmas Eve & Christmas Day driving around in a rented hybrid (--I go all out during Christmas--), blasting Muslim music on its speakers, and using my megaphone to tell kids that there is no Santa--or God.
I ended up getting into a fight with the father of some child I educated--which caused him (and not me) to go to jail (even though I started the fight with a God Delusion blow to his motherfucking head). His kids ended up spending their Christmas without their beloved Christmas-loving daddy, and with the knowledge that Santa Claus doesn't exist. I even hung out outside of their home on Christmas Eve, and used a spy microphone device to hear them crying about the "man who killed Christmas and put daddy in jail." As you might imagine, I was very happy to free a couple of kids of their crazy delusions. (It's too bad I've aborted fifteen children--because I'd probably make a really good father.)
All in all, it was a very Merry... um, Holiday.
But don't you dare say "Happy Holidays" to me, either. I find that even more offensive than "Merry Christmas." After all, it acknowledges the existence of Hanukkah. (By the way, I'm not anti-Semitic--I just hate Israel.)
