Persona c'est manga mais pas fantasy.

Bref.

Citation :

Having spent far too much of my time ploughing throughself-consciously epic Japanese games lately, I can't tell you how muchof a relief it is to come across one that doesn't take itself tooseriously. Despite being marketed as The Ultimate Next-Gen RPG inJapan, plastered all over billboards and convenience stores for monthsleading up to release, White Knight Chronicles turns out to beunexpectedly lighthearted. It's a game with birds that can inexplicablyproject holographs from their eyes, drunken midget furries lying aroundon farms, airships, princesses and ridiculous giant-robottransformation sequences, replete with awesomely wailing J-Rockguitars. Thank f*** for a game with a sense of humour in place ofmisplaced pomposity.
White Knight Chronicles does have rather a lot riding on it, though. It's been disappointment after disappointmentwith JRPGs lately in the face of ever-increasing strength from theirWestern competitors. It's an ambitious game, too, attempting to lureJapanese players online by forging a battle and gameplay system thatworks simultaneously as a single-player, story-based RPG and as anonline co-operative one. And despite the numerous inevitabledifficulties with such a far-reaching mission statement, Level-5 hasdone a fine job.

The game stars a band of lively charactersheaded up by Lenard - he of the henshin-a-go-go transformationcapabilities - trying to save a princess from mysterious assailants ina climate of international unrest. The world is a mix of medievalswords-and-sorcery and occasional random futurism; the titular WhiteKnight is supposedly an ancient warrior spirit, but he looks far morelike a massive shiny white robot. Lenard can transform into him inbattle at any time once you've saved up enough action points, butusually it's best to save it for the boss fights, which are nearlyalways preceded by (unintentionally?) hilarious action cut-scenes thatculminate in at least one transformation sequence. Lenard's not theonly one with that trick up his sleeve, see - enemies have a habit ofunexpectedly transforming as well.

Sorry Lenard - turns out the princess is in another airship.
WhiteKnight Chronicles' fighting is all in real-time - thinkPhantasy Star,or FFXII - and always leaves you free to do things likeswitch betweencharacters mid-battle with a quick few button-presses orrun away fromenemies on the map. You cycle through attacks and spellson the flywith the d-pad and execute them with the circle button. Itlooks likean action-RPG, but the actual mechanics are based on numbersanddice-rolls; enemy attacks will still hit you if you're standingbehindan obstacle, or halfway across the room.
The lynchpin ofthesystem is combo attacks, which you create and name yourself fromthevast selection of commands and actions that open up as you levelupyour characters. You can string together magic, close andlong-rangeattacks and aerial moves into fantastically satisfyingaction-game-likechain commands, which then slot seamlessly into yourmove-selectionmenu. They're executed with timed button-presses in thefield, contributing to the combat's hands-on, action-heavy feel. Hitsarepleasingly weighty, especially with axes and longswords, andfightsagainst more impressive enemies can look properlygorgeous, particularly when fighting on a beefed-up scale as the WhiteKnight.

Well, you wouldn't want to jump into the game with incorrect eyebrow width, would you?Levellingup earns each character skill points that are puttowards unlocking newmoves or capabilities in each of the weapon andmagic disciplines. Youcan specialise and unlock the majority of themoves in a particulardiscipline quite early in the game, allowing youto start experimentingwith combos as soon as possible, but spendingtime gleefully unlockingthings in the skill menus and working them intoyour battle strategy isa great joy in White Knight Chronicles right upto the final hours -and beyond, when you take the game online.

Theend result of these impressively flexible skill and combatsystems is aneasy-to-play and fun-to-watch RPG that feels much morecustomisable thanany other in the genre, and allows you to enjoy ithow you want. There'smercifully little pratting about in White KnightChronicles - nogrinding, no wandering, well-placed save-points and amini-map thatalways highlights where you need to go next with a littlestar icon lestyou get lost in a combo menu for a while and forgetwhere to go. Becauseof the constant experimentation you'll be doingwith combos and skills, combat doesn't get tired unless you getcomplacent and start fallingback on the same old techniques instead ofswitching characters andtweaking your battle strategy.
It's alittle too easy to fall intosuch a repetitive pattern. There's notmuch challenge in thesingle-player game and as a consequence it'spossible to muddle throughusing fairly basic combos, without switchingcharacters or payingattention to the hidden intricacies of the combat, like elementalattacks. It's only once you get stuck into the onlinemultiplayer thatgetting intimately acquainted with skills and combosbecomes essentialto progress as well as entertaining.
The onlineportion of WhiteKnight Chronicles exists entirely separately from thesingle-player, butitems and experience are transferable. You create anonline avatar atthe beginning of the game, adjusting fifty-fourdifferent sliders toachieve just the right breast size and angle.Amusingly, your avatar isalong for the ride in single-player too as aneternally mute accessoryto the plotline, standing at the back duringdramatic cut-scenes wearingwhatever ridiculous cape you've dressedthem in and a faintlyinappropriate smile.

http://images.eurogamer.net/assets/articles//a/4/2/0/6/0/0/a_med_w3.jpg.jpg

DONOT MESS.It'snot an MMO, nor a co-operative version of thesingle-player; you signup using GeoNet from any save-point, and fromthere you can access ahuge number of multiplayer-specific missions toplay with up to fivefriends. Quests take place in the same areas you'vealready been to insingle-player, and you unlock more by buying them inguild halls oruncovering more of the map on your own. You access questsvia your ownpersonal lobby space, to which you can invite friends -jumping intogames with strangers is virtually impossible thanks to acombination ofconfusing menus and a relative dearth of sociableplayers, but thismight change come the Western release.
It clearlytakes a lot ofcues from Monster Hunter, which is hardly surprisingconsidering thatseries' incomparable success as a social multiplayergame in Japan.Completing quests slowly increases your rank, and thevast majority ofthe quests themselves are amazingly boring. It's likeLevel-5 took allthe grinding and metaphorical rat-punching that's soappreciably absentfrom the single-player and shoved it all into anear-endless sequenceof practically identical online quests. Basically, they're little morethan a way of harvesting the endless materia itemsnecessary to craftpowerful custom weapons and armour.

Don'tfeed trolls. Instead, hit them in the knee with hammers. This, naturally,is quite a disappointment for anyone hoping for someinterestingco-operative story-based play from White Knight Chronicles.Themultiplayer is still a great way to show off and experiment withthegame's combat system - that it works so well both online andoffline isindeed an achievement for Level-5 to be proud of - but whenWhite KnightChronicles was first announced, I had visions of aco-operativestory-based JRPG rather than a huge but repetitiveselection of monsterhunting and fetch missions. Monster Hunter hasdone that to death in thepast, and done it better.
Disappointingmultiplayer doesn't take awayfrom how enjoyable the game is, though,or how well-thought-through andimpressively integrated its gameplaysystems are. Level 5 has taken itsinspiration from a lot of sourcesfor White Knight Chronicles, and theresult is a fresh synthesis thatis a definite jewel in the platform'scrown. It's funny, innovative andsatisfyingly complex without everbeing overwhelming, a JRPG for thelighter of heart and moreaction-orientated player. Level-5 was aimingto breathe a little freshair into this genre with White KnightChronicles, and in that respect itis a complete success.
