These Menus were not designed by Ubisoft
Not a whole lot to say about the overall menu/loading screen scheme except that it is clean, simple, and fairly quick. I didn't really tool around with the Campiagn menu, but the Multiplayer menu is phenomenal. Epic knows how to make a Multiplayer feature set. Among the options presented to the host of a multiplayer game are: Gametype, Score (for example, first to 3 rounds), Round Time Limit, Down but Not Out Time Limit, Friendly Fire, and the two most important features... First, the map selection: you can choose to just play a single map, and your room will simply restart matches on the same map, over and over again, OR you can choose to have a Custom cycle of maps. I couldn't find the options for changing the cycle, but I'm sure they're there, because that's what we played- it was set to cycle through all 10 maps on our machines. The second important feature is weapon swap: it's not quite a full-on 'choose wherever you want the weapons to spawn' type of thing, but you can change a hell of a lot more about the weapon layouts on the map than Halo 2, because it's done on an individual basis, much like Perfect Dark Zero. I didn't play around with this a whole lot either, but suffice it to say I'm VERY EXCITED about those two features, and I think they'll add a lot to this game in the long run.

For those of you who were worried about gore, the pause menu gives an option to turn down the violence, though I don't know how effective it is since I wanted all of the giblets I could get. Control schemes (button-wise) are not very customizable, though there are a few different options for control stick and trigger layouts. You can invert your looking and choose from three sensitivity levels (low, medium, high). All of this (as well as various A/V options) can be fussed with from the pause menu in game.

Regarding the ability to choose a character model- Terry Tate is in this game. Big fucking Defensive Lineman, voiced by Terry Tate himself. I will be playing as him, at least to start. THE PAIN TRAIN! WHOO WHOO!

If GoW = Halo 2, Chainsaw = Sword
I'll get this out of the way. The chainsaw is bullshit. You know how to tell? The same way masses of n00bs crowd around the exalted sword in Halo 2, half of the people there (especially the less skilled players) spent about 80% of the time trying to do nothing other than chainsaw people. It's pretty easy to ward someone off if they charge you from the front, as a few rounds to the gut will make them stagger. I even staggered the charging player then chainsawed him back a couple of times. I'll say that I think the chainsaw is very well balanced however because: 1) the shotgun is very powerful in close, 2) it doesn't lunge, 3) it locks your character in place and covers your screen in blood, making it hard to plan your next move in a chaotic firefight. 'So what's bullshit?' you might be asking. Two things. First, twice I managed to roll away at the last second before getting chainsawed with a quick tap of the A button. Or so I thought. Turns out there is lunge, of a sort, because my character suddenly split in half a good 10 feet away from his chainsawing assailant. Not cool. Secondly, one time my teammate and I got into a harried close-quarters fight with an opponent. I heard the deadly whine and turned to see that my teammate was caught in the clutches of the chainsaw. I rushed over and meleed in time to break the animation and save my teammate. Or so I thought. My teammate's gruesome cries filled the air, so I decided to finish off my teammate's attacker, at least make him pay for chainsawing my buddy. A second melee, then a third, and then the chainsaw animation's over. My opponent turns and immediately chainsaws me and I drop my controller speechless. If you'll remember, all of the weapons kill with two melees... the chainsaw animation makes one impervious to melees. Again, not cool.

Now to the other weapons. First of all, fire at anything in the environment and your shots will leave 'bullet holes' (black marks), but fire with a perfectly active reloaded clip and that shit leaves huge burning hot holes. Nothing says 'Damn, my bullets are more powerful' like gaping holes tinged with fire. I couldn't really see a different effect with active reloaded Torque Bow or Boomshot projectiles, but I'm sure they're there. As near as I could tell in my unscientific playtests, melee animations for most weapons are fairly similar, timing-wise, which was a little bit of a disappointment to me. As far as the sniper goes, any headshot is an instant brain soup, but it can take up to three body shots to put an opponent into down but not out mode. A perfectly actively reloaded bullet, though, can hit anywhere (I think- obviously my aim isn't bad enough to hit anywhere but the torso or head) and still serve up an immediate ticket to the A-tapping mini-game. In a lot of the videos, you see people firing from outside of cover while 'strafing' (a.k.a. walking slowly in either direction, or forwards. I would personally advise against that, because the act of moving makes your shots more inaccurate. A couple of times I tried to strafe while firing the sniper and my shot ended up missing even though I was aiming at the head- the bullets seem to have a hint (okay, more than a hint) of randomness introduced when you attempt to fire while moving. That said, in close it matters a whole lot less and I managed to turn and no-scope (holding L while moving) a couple of people in the face.

One weapon I haven't seen written about is the revolver, a more powerful pistol with a fairly slow rate of fire. Two close-range headshots kill, it seems, but I probably won't use that thing much.

The sniper is AMAZING. If I get host, you can be sure we'll be playing some snipers only matches, so get ready for it. That said, the inability to move while firing and the ability for players to quickly dart in and out of cover make this a very balanced weapon, albeit the one I used for probably 60-70 percent of my kills tonight (I love it).

The Torque Bow has to be charged up enough (by holding R down) for it to lodge itself in an opponent and explode the way we've seen in the videos. However, an interesting use I've discovered (while tooling around by myself- I haven't yet pulled off this leet maneuver in game) is to purposefully not charge it all the way and use it to bounce around corners when your opponent is hiding just out of reach.

The Hammer of Dawn kind of looks like the type of weapon that would be completely unbalanced. Come on, a big fucking space laser that can be dragged around the map? I assure you this is not the case. 1) You have to be stationary. 2) It takes a good 2-3 seconds for the laser to get focused in, and if you move your reticule at all or walk at all, the counter starts over. It is a big explosion, though, and yes, it is possible to commit suicide with the Hammer of Dawn, as I discovered when I tried to use my Orbital Defense Laser to destroy the train on Tyro Station. Whoops.

Grenade tagging is really cool, although I didn't notice it causing damage, which makes smoke grenade tagging truly for pure humiliation. Oh well... I pulled it off a number of times and it didn't get old. One guy managed to do it to me once while I was trying to snipe. There were two people left on my team and just one on his. He didn't manage to get away quickly enough, and imagine my surprise when I explode seeing a screen pop up letting me know my team had won thanks to a final suicide by my grenade tagging assailant. What a nub.

The weapons are fucking sweet, and provide for all sorts of tactical possibilities. We won't be seeing the bottom of the depth of strategy offered by this game for quite some time.

Mmm... the Maps
I played all ten. Three things occurred to me over the course of the night. One, these maps are amazingly atmospheric and beautiful. Really great stuff. This particular 'realization' (I know, I'm a braintrust) hit me over and over again all night. Two, it's immediately obvious that the tactical possibilities on most of the maps are endless, and I think this game is going to be in our 360s for months to come. There is cover literally everywhere, and you'll spot an opponent for a second only to have him disappear behind a tree/pillar/tombstone. It's intense and like nothing in any other game I've played because of the pacing. The best part about the cover is that it's not handled in a bullshit manner- if part of your head is sticking out, I can shoot it off. I like that. No Full Spectrum Warrior here... Three, the context sensitive A is a very good idea, and well-executed. The controls take some getting used to, and there's a little bit of hesitation before your character does some of his rolls off of cover. It also takes FOREVER for your character to decide to jump down to a lower level when you try to run off a short ledge. This gets frustrating... About halfway through the night I came to the realization that I would be enjoying the maps a lot more if I were playing Halo on them. Gears of War is fucking amazing. I'm not trying to say I'm not in love with this game. Movement is just so much more free and varied on a Halo battlefield, something I missed from time to time when my character SWAT turned instead of rolling away from cover or when he moved through the map at what could hardly be called a slow jog. The roadie run is very fast, but regular character movement is far from quick, which also takes getting used to. 'Shut up, Syracuse, get to the maps.' Word. Sorry.

Gridlock Destroyed city on one side, the ocean on the other. Pure eye candy. The combat is fun and the stopping power of the default weapons themselves mean that games don't necessarily devolve into straight sprints for the sniper and boomshot (located, as you know, on either side of the middle of the map). The sniper is a joy to use on this map, as you'll spot a little bit of a head peaking out from behind a car and take it off.

Canals The water looks great, and this map follows the second Gears of War map formula (the first being power weapons in the middle) by providing either team with a key power weapon- in this case, the sniper. The torque bow is still in the middle of the map and becomes a focal point for much of the action. Each side receiving a sniper makes for a much more tactical experience, in my opinion, especially because initially you can see the opposing sniper on the far bridge across the way. Incidentally, I tried to get cute once and play pop and shoot with the sniper on the other side, thereby discovering that when your brain explodes from a sniper, the skull rolls out. Ew.

Mansion OMG. Destructible cover. You've seen this map in videos by now, too, but the atmosphere is amazing and almost anything you can hide behind can be taken out, sometimes with as few as 2 or 3 bullets. The sniper wreaks havoc on cover and I'm pretty sure actively reloaded ammo does more damage per bullet. This map is small and intense and is one of my favorites so far.

Fuel Depot Another map where both sides get the sniper. I didn't really play around with the destructible gas station at all, but this map is one of the more open in the game, providing for all sorts of varied experiences. One team spawns in a warehouse of sorts and the other spawns out in the open by the gas station, an example of another thing I'm digging about these map designs. They're more or less symmetrical without looking identical on either side. Neato gang.

Mausoleum This thing is a maze, and when it gets to be a one-on-one, I don't really have a good tactic for finding your quarry. That said, there's all sorts of cover, and all sorts of opportunities for dodging in and out of graves during close quarters battles. When they described this one, I was definitely picturing a murky, creepy night atmosphere. Imagine my surprise when I spawned into a sun-filled graveyard during mid-day. There's a statue of some general on the side of the map that has the sniper, a helpful hint for navigating this map which is very small and incites a little bit of a claustrophobia, at least for me.

Tyro Station OMG TRAIN. Fuck Terminal. This train is so much more atmospheric. Nothing beats standing out in the tracks when you start to feel a low vibration in your controller, then you hear the roar and the train clatters overhead just as you dive into the stairwell in the middle. This is one of my favorite maps aesthetically because of the orange mist that lurks over the station and because the train is straight up ear and eye candy. It'll get your heart rate going. I couldn't find a sniper on this map, which was disappointing, and I won't be venturing out into the tracks often, since the Hammer of Dawn feels fairly worthless to me. That said, it could be interesting from the standpoint of holding your team's side of the tracks while raining down destruction on the other side. I won't be doing it, though. You'll find me in the tunnels that run underneath the tracks. I've never been down there when a train rolls through, but I imagine the vibrations are felt there, too. Secksy.

Clocktower OMG. This map is amazing. In the middle of a city that is starting to be overgrown with foliage. The green on the white and gray of the buildings is a very cool sight. This one is symmetrical and is my favorite of the 'mad dash for the center power weapon' maps. There is a low flat area, fairly small, where most of the shotgun/chainsaw/assault rifle firefights take place. Then there is a set of stairs up to the clocktower (if memory serves), where the sniper can be found. Once you have it, you're on top of the action, able to quickly take out the peons below with your high vantage point but extremely susceptible to any stragglers who've moved up the stairs to pick you off. After four or five sniper kills on this map, the kids in my game started asking "Who's B? Who the hell is B?" (the profile on my 'Box). I just kept quiet and smiled to myself. This one is an early frontrunner for favorite. Which brings me to...

Roof Tops The visuals on this map are unbelievable. It has a very Splinter Cell vibe with all sorts of different levels/walkways and rooms. Each side spawns on a rooftop and each is provided with a sniper and Hammer of Dawn. Up a stairway or a jump over a short wall (this is where I really started to get frustrated with that slight hesitation in the A button) from your respective rooftops and it's up to the center, where the Torque Bow becomes the focus of the fighting. All sorts of tactics are possible here, and matches are interesting because you don't see the enemy for such a long time as you pick up your sniper and navigate your rooftop, taking what seems like a good 30 or so seconds before entering combat. I'm sure that a strategy that could develop here would be to simply sit back and wait for the enemy, although they will undoubtedly be carrying the devastating Torque Bow. The visuals are fucking awesome because one team's base (roof) looks out onto the devastated city, with orange broiling clouds and lightning in the sky (it looks almost like the Orbital lasers were unleashed just hours before), while the other's looks out over (what I assume to be) the Plateau where the humans are holed up, green and pristine, with blue skies overhead. Wow.

War Machine One of my early favorites, even though it's really nothing special in the visuals department. This map feels like nothing but sandbags, as the little stereotypical sandbag bunkers are everywhere you could possibly imagine them. This is some sort of large warehouse, with an upper level on one side. Again, you get an overgrown vibe, especially if you look at the ceiling, with ivy-covered steel girders overhead. From a small spawn room, you make your way down two flights of stairs into the warehouse (which really opens up before you when compared to the spawn room- this level's pretty big horizontally, although very small base to base). On the lower side of the warehouse there is a sniper, parked on top of what used to be an Emergence Hole, with green vapor leaking out. It looks awesome, and the only thing that keeps me from looking down into the hole each time is the gunfire coming from the other side of the map. On the other side is where things really get interesting. Up a stairwell and located well above the sandbag bunkers with good angles on many of them is a turret. Fighting is going to get hot and heavy for this thing, especially since the turret is devastating (at least in Campaign, I didn't get to use it during Multiplayer). A good sniper should be able to take out the turret, which makes both sides of this warehouse of the utmost importance and I can't WAIT to play this map with some right proper gents (you guys) and start seeing the strategies blossom.

Escalation The most disappointing map, in my opinion. An overgrown stairwell in a park somewhere. (Sidenote: the foliage seems to be the most disappointing aspect of this game- it looks just fine on all of the other maps, but looks somewhat less real and beautiful in the context in which it's placed here. One team spawns at the top of the stairs, with few options (other than pistols and that other smaller SMG-type gun) as far as weapons. The other spawns at the bottom with a sniper rifle. As far as I could tell there weren't any weapons in the center of the map, which is a big circular fountain with a path leading around it to the other half of the stairs. So far, I'm not impressed, but we'll see... the idea seems great, I'm mostly disappointed by the visuals and the cramped nature of the map, which forces more close-quarters battles. It does make sniping more difficult, though, as people pop in and out of cover on their way up and down the stairs.

Sorry Guys, gotta do Campaign and Final Notes tomorrow. I have homework.

Quick answers to questions
Framerate-
It chugged twor or three times, but only for a short second or so and didn't really bother me. Smooth as butter the rest of the time.

3rd person view limiting-
Not really. Didn't bother me at all. Actually very refreshing and CliffyB was right about your model meaning more to you when you can see it.

New weapons-
Only one I saw was that Revolver type pistol

Memory Card-
I didn't take one because they cost so much, and I was glad I didn't because the Xboxes were enclosed. No logo, though I would have had 4 or 5 achievements by now (all Campaign since Multiplayer achievements occur in ranked matches). I did manage to steal a small sign.

Masturbation-
No because

Spits or Swallows-
Dude. GoW knows how I roll.

"SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Thursday that early orders for its upcoming Xbox 360 game "Gears of War" are second only to its 2004 blockbuster "Halo 2," giving the company a running start as it aims to compete with the debut of Sony's rival PlayStation 3 console.

"Halo 2" for the original Xbox had pre-orders of 1.5 million and an additional million copies were sold in its first day of release, setting the bar for subsequent Xbox titles."

"Shane Kim, Microsoft's vice president in charge of its game studios, declined to say exactly how many copies "Gears of War" has presold, or what expectations it has for the game.

"I can say that the demand, at least in terms of pre-orders and support and demand from retail partners, has been outstanding all over the world," Kim said in an interview.

"For Microsoft Game Studios it is the number two behind only 'Halo 2'. That's a significant number.""
