While visiting mainland China, I purchased an ASUS laptop computer. I like it. It is light and the screne resolution is very good. I have been studying how to back up and restore the Operating System if I want to use it for Ubuntu but that is the longer goal.
(by the way, I did this years ago before the pandemic and before the current global political circunstances)
The immediate goal is to see if I can fix the keyboard driver. You see, the @ symbol can not be typed. In other words, [SHIFT + 2] produces a '*' symbol (without single quotes). To be honest, I do not know if it is set the way it is because of the Chinese language drivers or because the CPP does not want its citizens to use the @ symbol because they are wanting to limit the public's knowledge of twitter and using western tech to send email addresses. But without the ability to type that symbol, I am limited in my capacity to do anything. I guess I could wipe the comptuer clean and just install Ubuntu. But even doing that would be a challenge if I can not type the @ symbol.
Here is another clue. The # (hashtag and also called "sharp" ) symbol is the british pound symbol "£". Yeah, it is looking a lot like it is not an issue with the keyboard being a different language and, since I can see why they might want to restrict this key too, it does look like I got something that has an amusing origin.
What do you think?
By the way, eventhough this is a French language website, it is listed as the best website for hardware issues in at least one list I found somewhere.
