ABS-201 is a groundbreaking hair loss injectable developed by Absci, a company based in Vancouver, Washington, that is leveraging AI to create revolutionary new medications. ABS-201 targets the prolactin receptor, a protein that typically plays a role in mammary development. Unlike other hair loss treatments like minoxidil and hair transplants, ABS-201 doesn’t just prevent further hair loss, it encourages hair regrowth.

BS-201 works by shunting the dormant hair follicles back into a different phase of the hair cycle called the anagen phase. No other drugs target the prolactin receptor in the same way, says Anthony Rossi, MD, a dermatologist at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, which partners with Absci.

ABS-201 is part of a burgeoning new trend in revolutionary hair loss treatments. For instance, a 2024 study published in the journal Frontiers in Pharmacology proposed using deoxy-ribose sugars—or the substance that makes up the backbone of DNA—as a topical hair regrowth treatment. In another study, published in Nature Cell Biology this year, researchers propose a medication called PP405, which wakes up “sleepy hair follicles,” which would focus on the follicles’ metabolism. Both treatment options proved to be promising in their respective trials, though they are not yet available on the market
 
The rise of GLP-1s—or injectable medications that manage Type 2 diabetes and obesity—may have “opened up the path” for injectable biologics like ABS-201, explains Sean McClain, founder and CEO of Absci. Injectables correct a major flaw of topical and oral interventions: forgetfulness. Most hair loss treatments must be administered every day, whether it be through a pill or an ointment. Injectables, like ABS-201, offer convenient dosing, so patients only need to remember a shot every few months.
