totoz ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) KK ( ͡⊙ ͜ʖ ͡⊙) | Get the most out of your battery - A Nougat Battery Optimization Guide! Hey guys! This might be a bit late, but as far as I know, no thread exactly like this exists yet for this subreddit, and one is very desperately needed, so I decided to make one. I see a lot of threads about shitty battery drain and people being unsatisfied with their battery and then wondering why it’s so, or what they can do about it, and frankly, it’s rather tiring to see so many of them haha. I know that a battery problems are often on a case by case basis, but a lot of them, if not all have similarities, and can be generalized and solved with a few set of instructions, which I will list below. I will list all that I can, and if anyone has any tips that they’d like to add, feel free to share them and I can add into the thread. I have organized the post into 6 sections. Those being: a) Your Screen b) Facebook and Messenger c) Snapchat d) Package Disablers / Greenify e) General Tips and Tricks f) DIY - Troubleshoot and other stuff I feel people should know. Without further ado, let’s begin (Needless to say, this is S7 / S7 Edge Nougat exclusive, but some of the advice can be applied to other phones). A) Your screen The screen will almost always be the highest drain of your battery, as is evident by the battery stats in the battery settings. The higher your brightness, the faster your drain. Our phones use AMOLED screens. Basically meaning, any True Black (not grey!) you see on your screen, are pixels that aren’t turned on. If the pixel isn’t turned on, it can’t consume battery. So, if possible, whenever the option presents itself, use the AMOLED dark theme of an app and have a Black background. Many apps now a days have dark themes included in their settings (example: many Reddit clients, browsers which have dark themes [Firefox, notably], Swipe / Flamingo [Facebook and Twitter Clients], all have them). Doing this has been shown to increase your battery life. If your launcher has dark theme, use it, etc. General rule of thumb: AMOLED Black all the things! If you are doing late night browsing or in a very dim place, there is an app that allows you to turn off pixels on your screen, thus conserving even more battery (again, possible only because our phones have AMOLED displays). Those apps are called “Pixoff” and “Pixel Filter.” From someone who has used them, turning off even 50% of your screen doesn’t hinder your experience much under dark conditions. I noticed my battery late at night increase a fair bit when using this. Browsing on Reddit only took up like 1% every 7 minutes-ish as opposed to 1% every 5 minutes (more or less, try it, it works!) B) Facebook and Messenger Time and time again, people complain about the drain these apps cause on their battery, and that uninstalling them causes their batteries to increase ‘exponentially’ (an exaggeration, obviously). However, uninstalling these apps is just not practical for people. So, here are alternatives. Messenger: The only messenger alternative in a true sense is an app called “Messenger Lite.” It’s a lighter version of the app designed for 3rd world countries, but it can be accessed easily online. Try considering using it, if you want, it doesn’t have all the features of Messenger (calling, sms integration, no chat heads), but if you just use Messenger to for casual chatting and nothing else, it’s a great lighter alternative. Facebook: Since Facebook is preinstalled on the phone, you can’t delete it, just disable it, which is good enough if you don’t use it. However, if you do! Worry not, there are plenty of other Facebook clients which aren’t nearly as Battery Hungry. Those being: Swipe, Friendly, and Metal. Swipe is the one I use, so I'm more biased towards it, I’m not sure about the other two, but I’m sure people can vouch for them. Swipe also has a messaging option built in (which is like the old mobile facebook chat layout before Facebook removed it and forced you to use Messenger). It also has an AMOLED black option. AFAIK, Swipe has all the options the regular FB app has except maybe live streaming. C) Snapchat Let’s be real here, Snapchat is NOT A WELL OPTIMIZED app for android. This is fact. The app is pretty shittily designed (in comparison to its iOS counterpart), and a monstrous battery hog. There is not getting around this, if you use the app, expect battery high battery drain while you use the app. It will be more prominent if you use it for extended periods of time. What you can do, however is: Go to Applications -> Snapchat -> Data Usage -> Restrict Background Mobile Data. And lastly, go to your battery optimizer, and check that Snapchat isn’t on the “Unmonitored List.” D) Package Disablers and Greenify Once upon a time, these apps were useful, but now? They are not, and in fact, can cause more harm than good. Please don’t use them. There is no need to use these apps on S7 Galaxy devices. Why do I say that? Well, essentially, it’s because of the way Touchwiz’s Battery Optimizer works. Touchwiz automatically monitors your battery habits and if there are apps you don’t use (even bloatware), it will automatically close them down after a bit. Give it a week or two to get used to your habits and it should stabilize to the point where apps you don’t use will seldom take up battery, and if they do, it’ll be insignificant to the point where it doesn’t matter. The way Greenify and Package Disablers mess your device up is when Touchwiz is trying to do it’s thing but it senses that certain apps are missing so it keeps on searching for them, thus causing more battery drain, and causing Touchwiz battery optimizer to prioritize all the wrong things. TL;DR - Don’t use Greenify (it’s good, just not for our devices) and Package Disablers, let TouchWiz do its thing. E) General Tips and Tricks - These are mostly things I've seen users post and say that it helped their battery life (I only put it here if said tip was corroborated by multiple people). I decided to compile them into one list so people don't have to search multiple threads for it. Developer Options -> Disable Auto Updates In a similar vein, search for ‘software updates’ in settings -> Software Update-> Turn off Download Updates Automatically If you use Maps, go to Offline Settings and disable Automatically Update AND download Offline Areas If you use Sasmung Cloud, set it so that it only back ups to the cloud when your phone is charging Turn off any ‘Advanced Features’ you don’t use Disable any apps you don’t use through the Applications Settings! Bloatware, etc, whatever you can. Accounts -> Disable anything from syncing that you don’t need Location -> Improve Accuracy -> Turn off BOTH Wifi / Bluetooth Scanning In a similar vein, when on Location, and if any app is accessing your location that obviously shouldn't be, restrict its access to location via the permissions page. If you don’t use Google Feed (those news stories on the App), disable it. Search in settings for the Samsung Print Plug in, and disable it Search for Nearby Device Settings in Scanning and disable that too. Change the Resolution to 1080p - This one is a bit iffy, since I can't confirm whether or not it actually saves battery, but some people say it does. There is no harm in trying though, since it is next to impossible to tell the difference between 1080p and 1440p. Sasmung's Battery saving profiles offer you the ability to restrict CPU usage to max 70% and turn off background data syncing. Wonderful for when your battery is low and you still want to use it a fair bit. If you have updated to Nougat recently, and have not already done so, factory resetting is a great idea, and something you should do. A factory reset is a great idea to try if nothing else seems to work as well! F) DIY - Troubleshoot and other general info I feel people should know If despite all of this, you are still experiencing high battery drain, check your battery stats and see if an app is using an unusual amount of battery, and then uninstall it. If you don't want to uninstall the app and it is causing excessive drain, look in the settings for said app and see if there is anything that can help you to lower its battery consumption. Common sense is your best friend! If no app seems to be causing it and you are still experiencing bad battery, download “AccuBattery” to check the status of your battery. It might just have very low capacity. DO NOT USE FAST CHARGING ON THE DAILY. If someone tells you otherwise, they are lying, fast charging does deplete your battery much faster than regular charging. One person I knew got their S7 Flat to 2100 mAh capacity through frequent fast charging in under a year. I myself used to use Fast charging a lot (like, a lot), and only 8 months in, my capacity is at 2900ish mAh (Edge). Use Fast charging only when you have to or need to, otherwise stick to regular charging to prolong your battery life, the quicker charge speed is not worth it in the long run, trust me. For better battery stats, download GSAM Battery Monitor and give it special permissions through ADB Commands (very easy, don’t worry, it guides you through it). A weak wi-fi signal and data signal can deplete your battery faster than it you'd normally expect, even on standby. Personal story, I tried everything I possibly could and saw that no matter what I did, my standby time was shit, I even factory reset and it was still garbage. I was like wtf, and then, I realized that it was due to my wifi signal at home. My phone only drained fast (5% every 2 hours) at home due to the shitty wifi we had, and this drain was present nowhere else (not at uni, the library, friends house, only my house). If you are in a place where the signal is very weak, the effect is a bit more prominent, so, point is, a weak signal (even Wi-Fi) can ruin standby times. Just keep that in mind. Generally, if travelling, data drains your battery faster than regular because your phone has to constantly search for the signal as it is changing. Continuing on from the previous point, if you are browsing / using your phone heavily while on Data while on the move, expect your battery to drain faster than if you were on wifi. Check how your battery drains on wifi doing the same activities before jumping to the conclusion that your battery is bad or something's wrong.
