#NASA now saying there was an "Off nominal insertion".  This indicates some kind of burn occurred after separation from the Centaur but that the burn was NOT the Orbit Insertion Burn (NASA clear that didn't happen).  #Starliner stable in a low orbit. That's all we know. #OFT

Starliner in stable orbit. The burn needed for a rendezvous with the  ISS did not happen. Working the issue.

 currently showing one object in their TLE pipeline for the #Starliner flight - 44900/2019-094A is in a 76 x 191 km, 51.63 deg. orbit. Epoch is given as 11:59 UTC, so probably either Starliner or the Centaur immediately after separation.

There's a second set of orbital elements released now. 187 x 222 km, with epoch at 13:20UTC.

Source tells me launch by #AtlasV was nominal. No indication of under performance or any problem w spacecraft separation. Problem occurred with #Boeing #Starliner orbital insertion burn that happened late and w spacecraft not in proper attitude. Issue with pitch control. #NASA

Update: #Starliner had a Mission Elapsed Time (MET) anomaly causing the spacecraft to believe that it was in an orbital insertion burn, when it was not. More information at 9am ET:

Because #Starliner believed it was in an orbital insertion burn (or that the burn was complete), the dead bands were reduced and the spacecraft burned more fuel than anticipated to maintain precise control. This precluded @Space_Station rendezvous.

Starliner is now apparently in a 187 x 222 km orbit following a second burn.  That's a decent insertion orbit - similar to Soyuz for example - and should give them a chance to recover the rest of the mission if they have enough propellant margin left

So apparently #Starliner didn’t know where it was in its flight timeline. But also no one apparently informed @JimBridenstine
 that the 9 am briefing was cancelled.

We are getting good burns and are elevating the orbit of the spacecraft.

So, no ISS for you, Starliner. Too much prop used up recovering from the anomaly. Good news: seems like this would have been survivable for the crew, and hopefully they have enough prop left to successfully recover the spacecraft.

Le système de contrôle d'attitude a une marge de manœuvre où il est suffisamment proche de l'alignement pour qu'il n'a pas besoin de tirer sur les moteurs pour maintenir l'attitude. Mais en raison d'une erreur, le vaisseau spatial avait fixé des limites d'attitude très strictes et corrigeait constamment.

C'est parce qu'il pensait qu'il était dans une insertion orbitale, au lieu de cela, il ajustait simplement son attitude et brûlait du carburant. Ceci est quelque peu similaire au premier lancement de Delta III que j'ai décrit récemment, où le contrôle d'attitude excessif avait épuisé les réserves.
