A fairly thorough way to rename the main NT directory to WINNT is this:
1. SCOPY the whole main NT directory into a second one named WINNT.
2. Run RDISK /S to create a new emergency repair disk and update the repair
folder.
3. Use EXPAND.EXE to expand the registry files from the repair folder into
the WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG folder.
4. Edit BOOT.INI to add a choice to boot into the new folder.
5. Boot into the new folder.
6. Search the entire registry with REGEDIT.EXE for the string WINNT35 and
change it to WINNT manually. If you run out of patience, use a
search-and-replace utility. If you are very conscientious, search all INI
files also.
7. Reboot into WINNT and see whether this works.
8. Rename WINNT35 into something else for a test.
9. Reboot into WINNT and see whether everything works, all sevices start,
etc.
An even better, but slower way is to install a second, minimal NT into a
separate folder first, then use that to copy the main NT folder. This makes
steps 2 and 3 superfluous.
WARNING: Using Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE or REGEDT32.EXE) incorrectly can
cause serious, system-wide problems that may require you to reinstall
Windows NT to correct them. I cannot guarantee that any problems resulting
from the use of Registry Editor can be solved. Back up your registry first
(using either NTBackup.exe or RDisk.exe /s), then use the Registry Editor at
your own risk.
