New Maxtor ATA Drives! 05 September 2002
Today Maxtor announces its next generation ATA drives, all centered around 80 GB/platter technology.
First is the DiamondMax 16, named such as it represents the 16th generation of Maxtor's venerable 5400 RPM DiamondMax series. Available in capacities up to 160 GB, the drive features an ATA-133 interface with fluid bearing motors as an option.
Next up is the DiamondMax Plus 9, Maxtor's 80 GB/platter 7200 RPM offering. Also available in capacities up to 160 GB, the DM+9 comes standard with fluid bearing motors. Options include a serial ATA interface and/or an 8-megabyte buffer.
The firm has decided to resurrect Quantum's Fireball name with its third-generation slimline single-head unit. The Fireball 3 features a minimal number of moving parts in delivering up to 40 gigs of capacity, construction that features a case 38% thinner than standard drives, and an ATA-133 interface.
Maxtor's DiamondMax Plus 8 rounds the announcement. This is the company's first 7200 RPM drive to feature minimal part counts and a single head. While the 8 shares the Fireball 3's ATA-133 interface and 40 GB capacity, the drive also comes with fluid bearings on all units.
An interesting development accompanies this product announcement. Starting October 1st, the warranty on Maxtor's standard ATA drives will be one year in length, down from the three years that Maxtor and many competitors currently offer on their desktop units.
A busy day for Maxtor! The manufacturer expects all of these drives to hit the shelves shortly. We'll bring you more information and reviews as samples become available.
