Note: These options only prevent users from running programs that are started by the Windows Explorer process. It does not prevent users from running programs such as Task Manager, which are started by the system process or by other processes. Also, if users have access to the command prompt, Cmd.exe, this policy does not prevent them from starting programs in the command window that they are not permitted to start by using Windows Explorer. However, Tweaki can disable the command prompt in order to circumvent this loophole. See the related option to learn more.
When you add an application to the list Tweaki checks to make sure the application has an entry within the APP_PATHS key of the registry. Any application added to the list must have a valid APP_PATHS key in order to run properly. Most applications will have a valid registry entry already and no further action is necessary. However, you should set up a test environment to insure the results required before promoting to a production environment. If a valid entry does not exist for any application you are adding Tweaki will notify you. See below for information on manually adding an APP_PATHS registry key.

Manually creating an APP PATHS key:
Go to Start | Run and type in regedit.
Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths
Right click the App Paths key and select New | Key. Type in the executable name of the application your trying to add to the list, i.e. tweaki.exe. Next, highlight the new key and double click its (Default) entry on the right side pane. In the resulting dialog box type in the full path to the application you are adding to the list. Next, right click within an open area of the right side pane and select New | String Value. In the resulting dialog type in the path to the application you are adding to the list. Be certain to leave the executable name out of the path. The path should terminate at the folder containing the executable. View other keys within the App Paths key for examples. |
