OFFXP: Error Message: MAPI Was Unable to Load the Information Service PSTPRX.DLL
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:
Microsoft Outlook 2002
--------------------------------------------------
------------------------------
SYMPTOMS
After you upgrade to Office XP while you are using Microsoft Outlook 2000 Internet Mail Only (IMO), when you remove Office XP, revert to Office 2000, and then upgrade again to Office XP, the following error message appears when you start Outlook 2002:
Unable to open your default e-mail folders. The .DLL file for the information service could not be found. MAPI was unable to load the information service Pstprx.dll. Be sure the service is correctly installed and configured.
NOTE: You may receive this error if you upgrade over Outlook 2000 Corporate Workgroup (C/W) mode, or this error may display in Pstprx32.dll, if you upgrade from Outlook 2000 IMO.
Pstprx.dll is the C/W file.
Pstprx32.dll is the IMO file.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs because Outlook 2002 already upgraded the profile once, and it set a registry key not to do it again. When you revert to Outlook 2000 IMO, choose to use the current profile, and then upgrade to Outlook 2002 again, that profile is skipped in the upgrading process.
RESOLUTION
A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem described in this article and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing at a later time, to further ensure product quality. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Office XP Outlook 2002 Public Update that contains this fix.
To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the fix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services phone numbers and information about support costs, please go to the following address on the World Wide Web:
http://support.microsoft.com/directory/overview.asp
NOTE: In special cases, charges that are normally incurred for support calls may be canceled, if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. Normal support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.
The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:

Sep-12-2001 10.0.3311.0 Outlph.dll

WORKAROUND
To work around this behavior, manually create a profile for Outlook 2002:
With Outlook closed, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click Mail.
Click Show Profiles, click Add, name the profile, and then click OK.
Click Add a new e-mail account, and then click Next.
Click a type of account, and then click Next.
In the E-mail Accounts dialog box, enter the necessary information, and then click Next.
Click Finish.
If Always use this profile is selected, choose the profile you just created, and then click OK.
NOTE: In some cases you may need to specify ?Prompt for Profile? to correct this error after creating a new profile.
