Using ARP -s commandsback to top of page
These examples show the commands to configure a Jetdirect using ARP -s. In UNIX "arp" is usually typed in lower case, in Windows, upper case:
Example 1 (for UNIX®)) At a command prompt type the following two commands: o
ARP -s 10.1.2.3 08:00:09:12:34:56
o
ping 10.1.2.3
(In the ARP -s command, use a space between the IP address and the MAC address)
Example 2 (for Microsoft®) Windows) At a command prompt type the following two commands: o
ARP -s 10.1.2.3 08-00-09-12-34-56
o
ping 10.1.2.3
(In the ARP -s command, use a space between the IP address and the MAC address. Note that the MAC address is separated by hyphens)
After the ARP -s configuration, print a Jetdirect Configuration page from the printer. In the TCP/IP section the following information should be seen: Host Name: NOT SPECIFIED Config By: USER SPECIFIED IP Address: 10.1.2.3 Subnet Mask: NOT SPECIFIED Def. Gateway: 10.1.2.3 Using telnet to configure the subnet mask and gateway The configuration in the previous example is fairly limited since the only thing that is configured is the IP address. A more realistic example for Windows is: o
ARP -s 10.1.2.3 08:00:09:12:34:56
o
ping 10.1.2.3
o
telnet 10.1.2.3
This example adds a telnet command. This allows the administrator to configure the subnet mask and default gateway. After telnetting to the Jetdirect, type a question mark to see all of the commands available to configure the Jetdirect. NOTE: HP recommends that the static ARP table entry be removed after the Jetdirect obtains the TCP/IP address information. Deleting the static ARP table entry can be done by typing: ARP -d_ip_address_used_in_ARP -s.
