FastTrak Series Linux Driver v1.20 Build 9
Installation note for Redhat Linux [06/22/2001]
[INTRODUCTION]
1.1 Foreword
This driver diskette only supports specific Redhat Linux. It cann't
be used on other Linux distributions for FastTrak Series.
1.2 Support list
Red Hat 6.2 (2.2.14-5.0)
Red Hat 6.2-OEM (2.2.14-6.1.1)
Red Hat 7.0 (2.2.16-22)
Red Hat 7.1 (2.4.2-2)
1.3 Red Hat 7.1 ATA issue on FastTrak Series PDC20262/PDC20265
From Linux Kernel 2.4.0 ~ 2.4.5, it will treat PDC20262/PDC20265
as a simple IDE controller. And Linux IDE driver will start to handle it.
It results Linux system unstable whether FastTrak Driver loaded or not.
If your FastTrak Controller is PDC20262 and PDC20265 , it is recommanded
to give up installing on RedHat Linux 7.1 , and replace with RedHat 7.0.
[INSTALLATION]
Extract the contents of the TGZ file onto a formatted floppy disk
called FastTrak Driver Disk.
2.1 Install the FastTrak Series Linux Driver into an EXISTING SYSTEM
Get driver "ft.o" from FastTrak Driver Disk by issuing command :
# gzip -dc modules.cgz > modules.cpio
# cpio -idumv < modules.cpio
(thus you can get Modules from subdirectories which you need)
and load FastTrak Driver :
# insmod scsi_mod.o (only necessary on RedHat7.1, get it from /lib/modules/..)
# insmod ft.o
2.2 Install the FastTrak Series Linux Driver into an NEW SYSTEM
1.) Start the Redhat Install by booting with the installation diskettes
or bootable CD ROM.
2.) At the "Welcome to Red Hat Linux ..." installation screen, a
prompted labeled "boot:" will appear at the bottom of the screen. At
the prompt type "expert" (without quoations) and then press the
enter key.
3.) At the "Devices" dialog box insert the FastTrak Driver Disk in the
floppy drive and then select "OK" or "Yes".
If on RedHat7.1 installation skip to Step 8.
4.) After reaching the "Devices" dialog box again, select "Add Device".
5.) When asked "what kind of device would you like to add?", select
"SCSI", and then select "OK".
6.) Now press "P" key and scoll down to "Promise FastTrak Driver ....",
and then select "OK".
7.) The installation process will now display the
"Promise FastTrak Driver ..." as been found, select "Done".
8.) Continue with the installation as normal.
[NOTE]
1.) You may boot from any size partition as Redhat 7.0 does not have
the 1 gig boot limitation that 6.2/7.1 does. LILO MUST BE INSTALLED
ON THE MBR IF YOU WANT TO BOOT FROM THE ARRAY.
2.) If you would like to run SCSI SMP Modules on Linux. It is recommended
to run on RH7.0 Linux, because it is stabler than RH6.2 Linux and
better performance than RH7.1 Linux.
4.) If you would like to boot with FastTrak driver on RedHat 7.0/7.1
"enterprise" .The kernel will panic , because FastTrak does not
support "enterprise" kernel yet.So please change default booting
label to "linux up" or "linux smp".
