LG.Philips LCD to Ship 42" TFT-LCD, World's Largest, in Second Half of 2003
LG.Philips LCD Co., Ltd. unveiled the world's largest TFT-LCD for high-definition television (HDTV) applications. Topping its own largest-to-date 30-inch (30W) display by 40 percent, this new TFT-LCD measures 42 inches in a modern "wide" aspect ratio shape. LG.Philips LCD's new 42-inch TFT-LCD offers a high resolution of wide XGA, and leverages the company's proprietary S-IPS (Super-In-Plane-Switching) technology. As a result, this first-of-its-kind display delivers a wide viewing angle of more than 175 degrees, brightness of 500 cd/m2, and a response time of 12ms -- delivering the bright, crisp images and fine detail essential for supporting digital broadcasting. In addition to its large screen size and slim form factor (50.9 mm in thickness), this new display also offers a high contrast ratio (500:1), ensuring a clear, crisp picture with low weight and low power consumption. This display is ideal for use in space-friendly wall-mounted LCD TVs.

Samsung has also applied its proprietary Patterned Vertical Alignment (PVA) technology to achieve a 170˚-viewing angle in all directions. The true color saturation is 72% against the NTSC standard and the contrast ratio is 800:1.
