"Solid-archiving" benefits from treating all files as one data stream. That is why it is excellently suitable for archives with many small or similar files. However when modifying (adding or deleting) those archives, WinAce has to decompress the whole data stream in order to maintain data integrity. Solid-archiving is a time consuming process compared to normal archiving. The advantage is a recognizable higher compression rate.
You should not use Solid-archives when handling larger files and need to access single files from that archive frequently.
Note that Solid-archiving does not slow down the extraction of whole archives (all the files in an archive).
