1. DESCRIPTION
GAME_WHL.EXE is a Registry file that allows gamers to use a Logitech
wheel/roller mouse without having to disable or end task on
EM_EXEC.EXE, when playing games such as Rogue Spear and Quake 2/3.
NOTE: This file is designed to be used with Logitech MouseWare
software version 8.40 and above. If you do not have this
version, it can be downloaded from the Logitech Web site.
For Windows 95/98, and NT 4.0.

2. INSTALLATION
For purposes of these examples, we will assume the floppy drive is
the "A:" drive. If this is your "B:" drive, please substitute "B:"
for "A:" throughout the instructions below.
These examples also assume that Windows has been installed into the
directory C:\WINDOWS. If Windows has been installed into a directory
other than C:\WINDOWS, please substitute that directory for
C:\WINDOWS in all of the instructions below. For example, if the
step is to "Type CD\WINDOWS\SYSTEM and press [ENTER]", but Windows
is installed in the C:\WIN95 directory, please type "CD\WIN95\SYSTEM"
instead.
If you are not certain of the directory Windows is installed in, you
can find out by clicking on "Start", "Find", "Files or Folders". Type
in "WIN.COM" and press [ENTER]. When the listing of files found comes
up, look at the column titled "In Folder". This will show you where
Windows is installed. However, if multiple files are listed, you will
need to determine which folder is the directory Windows is installed.
2.1 Decompressing the files from GAME_WHL.EXE ************************
If you have not already done so, copy the GAME_WHL.EXE file into an
empty temporary directory, or onto a blank formatted floppy
diskette. Once the file has been moved to one of these locations,
please follow these instructions:
- Launch Windows 95/98, NT 4.0.
- Close any open applications.
- Click on "Start", "Find", then "Files or Folders".
NOTE: If you have copied the GAME_WHL.EXE file to a floppy
diskette, change the "Look in:" directory to search the
"A:\" drive.
- Type "GAME_WHL.EXE" and press [ENTER].
- Double click the GAME_WHL icon in the listing of files found.
- A dialog box will appear asking you if you want the file to be
extracted to "C:\LOGITEMP". Click "UNZIP" to continue.
- Once the files have been successfully unzipped, click "OK".
- The unzip utility will close, and the READ_1ST.TXT file will open
in Windows Notepad. You may read through this file and print it
out for reference.
- Close Notepad when you are ready to continue.
The file is now expanded and ready to be installed.
2.2 Installation under Windows 95/98, NT 4.0 *************************
Once the file has been decompressed, follow these steps to install
the patch:
- Click on "Start", then "Run...".
- The Run box will open.
- Type the following in the "Open:" line:
C:\LOGITEMP\GAME_WHL.REG
and press [ENTER].
- Windows will display a message asking if you are sure you want to
add the information of this GAME_WHL.REG file to the Registry;
click the "Yes" button.
- Windows will then display a message that the information in
GAME_WHL.REG has been successfully entered into the Registry.
Click the "OK" button.
- For the change to take effect, you must now restart the system.
Your game should now be able to properly use your Logitech
Wheel/Roller mouse.
2.21 (Optional) Manually Editing the Windows Registry ****************
If you are comfortable editing the Windows registry, you may make
the same change to the registry as the GAME_WHL.REG file does.
Follow the instructions below:
NOTE: For information about how to edit the registry, view the
"Changing Keys And Values" on line Help topic in the Registry
Editor (REGEDIT.EXE). Make a backup copy of the registry
files (SYSTEM.DAT and USER.DAT) before you edit the registry.
WARNING: Using the Registry Editor incorrectly may cause symptoms
requiring a reinstallation of Windows 95/98, NT 4.0.
Logitech cannot guarantee that issues resulting from the
incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use the
Registry Editor at your own discretion. The Registry
Editor should only be used to make the following
modifications. Please follow the instructions below:
- Click the "Start" button on the Windows Desktop and select
"Run...".
- On the Open line, type C:\WINDOWS\REGEDIT.EXE and press [ENTER].
- From the Registry Editor screen, double click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
- Double click on SOFTWARE.
- Double click on Logitech.
- Double click on MouseWare.
- Double click on CurrentVersion.
- Single click on Technical and information should be displayed on
the right side of the Registry Editor screen.
- Under the Name column, double click on the "MouseHookDLLEnable"
entry and the Edit String Dialogue box should appear.
- Modify the Value Data line to read "0", and click the "OK" button
- Exit the Registry editor (saving is automatic).
- Restart the system.
Your game software should now be able to properly use your Logitech
Wheel/Roller.
**********************************************************************
3. ADDITIONAL NOTES
3.1 What this GAME_WHL.REG Patch Changes *****************************
The GAME_WHL.REG file changes the Registry key for the
MouseHookDLLEnable=1 to 0. You will find this Registry key under:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Logitech\MouseWare\
CurrentVersion\Technical
Look for the "MouseHookDLLEnable" on the right side of the Registry
editor.
3.2 If Accidentally Installed ***************************************
Please note that this patch will not cause any issues with other
Logitech mice or trackballs if accidentally installed under Windows
95/98, and Windows NT 4.0.
A possible side effect is that some "double scrolling" may occur in
some applications that can receive wheel messages from both
DirectInput and Office compatible wheel messages.
3.3 Windows NT 4.0 **************************************************
This reg file is supported by Windows NT 4.0
**********************************************************************
4. CLEAN-UP
Once you have completed the installation as described above, you do
not need the files this update placed in the C:\LOGITEMP directory.
You may delete these files, or you may copy them to a floppy diskette
in case you ever need to reinstall them.
**********************************************************************
