The study finds that large telescopes like ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT) and ESO's upcoming Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) will be "moderately affected" by the constellations under development. The effect is more pronounced for long exposures (of about 1000 s), up to 3% of which could be ruined during twilight, the time between dawn and sunrise and between sunset and dusk. Shorter exposures would be less impacted, with fewer than 0.5% of observations of this type affected.

Citation :

The study also finds that the greatest impact could be on wide-field surveys, in particular those done with large telescopes. For example, up to 30% to 50% of exposures with the US National Science Foundation's Vera C. Rubin Observatory (not an ESO facility) would be "severely affected”, depending on the time of year, the time of night, and the simplifying assumptions of the study. Mitigation techniques that could be applied on ESO telescopes would not work for this observatory although other strategies are being actively explored.

Citation :

Wide-field survey telescopes like the Rubin Observatory can scan large parts of the sky quickly, making them crucial to spot short-lived phenomena like supernovae or potentially dangerous asteroids.

LSST ultra-wide exposures on a large telescope: up to 30%
of the exposures would be lost during the first and last hours
of the night, and almost 50% of the twilight exposures would
be contaminated

Ca me semble tres limite quand meme, non ?

Citation :

Two main types of mitigation can be considered. The first is
scheduling of the observations: At the global level, observing
toward the direction opposite to the Sun (toward the east in the
evening and toward the west in the morning) will ensure that
the satellites are in the shadow of the Earth, therefore avoiding
contamination of the exposures. While this is simple to implement and will work even for a wide field of view, this mitigation
method is not suitable for all programmes. At a much more detailed level, it is possible to forecast the position of the satellites
from their orbital elements, and to observe a field at a time when
it will not be crossed by a satellite. The implementation of this
mitigation is much more complex, and is not suitable for all programmes (e.g. it may turn out to be impossible to schedule a long
exposure with a wide field of view).

The second type of mitigation involves interruption of the
observations: For programmes that require observations in the
region of the sky where the satellites are illuminated, it is possible to compute the exact time when a satellite will cross the field
of view, and close the shutter during that time. The implementation of that mitigation would be complex, and is not suitable for
all programmes (e.g. a large field of view could require so many
interruptions that the exposure would not be practical). In both
cases, the availability of high-precision, up-to-date orbital elements for all the satellites would be crucial so that the accurate
position and timing of the satellites can be computed.

Citation :

In December, the Air Force tested its experimental Advanced Battle Management System that will connect air, sea, land and space assets. The exercise was deemed an overall success, with SpaceX Starlink satellites used to link to a Lockheed Martin (LMT) AC-130 gunship.

As a next step, the Air Force's April 8 event is going to be "massive," Air Force acquisition chief William Roper told reporters at the Pentagon Friday.

Citation :

The SpaceX Starlink satellites will play an even bigger role than in December, as Roper wants them to connect to more assets, including platforms on the ground.

"SpaceX has been a great industry partner for us," he said. "They are very excited, and we are excited to learn more about their satellites through the demonstration."

The exercises will include live-fire drills, such as taking down a UAV and shooting down a cruise missile. They will be performed across the country, from Marine Corps Air Station Yuma in Arizona to Eglin Air Force Base in Florida.

Citation :

NASA has assigned astronaut Shannon Walker to the first operational crewed flight of the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft on a mission to the International Space Station.

Walker will join NASA astronauts Michael Hopkins and Victor Glover Jr., as well as Soichi Noguchi of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), for a six-month expedition aboard the unique space laboratory.

This mission will be the first in a series of regular, rotational flights to the station following NASA’s certification of the new crewed system following completion and validation of SpaceX’s test flight with astronauts, known as Demo-2. This test is expected to take place in mid-to-late May as part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program.

Pending the successful Demo-2 test, Walker, Glover, Hopkins, and Noguchi will launch aboard Crew Dragon on SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket from Launch Pad 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. That launch is targeted for later this year.

Above all, rating a spacecraft is more than a set of requirements, a process, or a certification. It involves a mindset, instilled by leadership, where each person feels personally responsible for their piece of the design and for the safety of the crew.

ça a l'air laborieux
