well well well :)

un p'tit pavé de news fraîchement arrivé dans ma boîte...
ça cause FPS pour les intéressés.

X-Plane 7: FAST scenery frame-rate, moderate RAM requirement.

X-Plane 8: EVEN FASTER scenery frame-rate if using scenery from X-Plane
7, with somewhat higher RAM requirement. (stuff is pre-calculated, thus
more speed, but also mor e RAM to remember it all!)

X-Plane 8: SOMEWHAT, AND SOMETIMES MUCH LOWER frame-rate if using
version-8 scenery, because there are so many TENS OF THOUSANDS OF ROAD
SEGMENTS AND BUILDINGS IN VIEW IN CONGESTED AREAS. Near San Diego
airport, there are over 53,000 road display lists! (a display list is a
pre-memorized "group" of roads) And objects? EVEN MORE! Nobody at Apple
or Microsoft was expecting this kind of load when they deisgned the
computers, so we are pushing the edge hard here, and this is what we
are finding:

1: Dictionary: I shall use the following terminology:
V-8: X-Plane version 8.
V-7: X-Plane version 7.
G-8: X-Plane version 8 SCENERY. ("Generatton-8" scenery)
G-7: X-Plane version 7 SCENERY. ("Generation-7" scenery)
FPS: frames per second of the sim. 30 is smooth.
RAM: memory, not to be confused with hard drive space (sigh)
DL: display list. the way of "pre-memorizing" some scenery for rapid
display as you fly.
NYC: the city that never sleeps.

V-8 runs even better (faster) than V-7 with G-7 scenery. This is thanks
to the DLs. They take som RAM, but give some speed.

So, if you want pure MAXIMUM SMOOTHNESS AND SPEED, then you will want
to run V-8 with G-7.

But, moving to V-8 with G-8, the situation gets a little more
complicated on the bleeding edge:

My moderate windows machine (512 meg ram, maybe 64 vram, maybe 1 ghz
processor.. about 2 years old) can handle V -8/G-8 at 50 FPS around San
Bern... NOT TOO BAD!

BUT, go to NYC and see all the THOUSANDS UPON THOUSANDS OF ROADS AND
BUILDINGS and the FPS can drop to under 20 on my machine... all the
roads and buildings will load up any machine if the rendering options
are set to max. Incidentally, the rendering options screen of the final
version of X-Plane 8 has options to set the roads and objects as you
like, from NONE to TOTALLY INSANE with plenty of steps in between.

Bottom line: you can go from SUPER-FAST to LUGGING HARD, all depending
on your computer you have and the rendering options you set.

That was for windows.

Now for Macintosh.

The Macs, though better machines than Windows in many ways, are NOT so
good with 100,000 display lists. The SAME DL takes a LOT more RAM on
the Mac, so the Mac stutters and falters as it tries to find the 5000
DL's that is needs in RAM for each frame. I beleive this is much worse
on the Mac than on the Windows because the Mac takes so much MORE RAM
per DL that the machine winds up thrashing RAM to get to the needed DL.
There may be other factors here, but I am not yet sure. This is a
problem when you fly by the camera, and a totally different scenery
area becomes visible as the camera pans across the landscape. The
result: STUTTER, as the Mac fumbles around desperately in RAM to find
the DLs for the new area to be seen. The problem becomes even worse
(much worse) when you look a MAP view, like the low enroute map: Now
the poor Mac has to access ALL the DLs, since ALL the world is visible
in the map! This gets REALLY slow with the detailed new scenery, As
well, the ATI cards on the Macs do NOT handle COMPOSITING the same as
the Nvidia or Windows video cards... they seem to blend the colors in a
funky way that results in strange colors appearing in the terrain.

So, G-8 scenery runs fine on the WINDOWS machines, but because the Macs
have some different ideas about how big a DL should be, and how to
composite textures, the scenery does nto work so well on them right
now.

So, what is my plan?

Well, to lie around all day, doign nothing but fielding complaints, of
course.

NO!
JUST KIDDING!
OF COURSE we have a plan.. just like always!

And here is what it is:

1: We HAVE to have V-8/G-8 on the shleves by Thanksgiving. This is NOT
negotiable. My publisher requires this.
Occasionally, someone will tell me "I have to have X-Plane NOW!"
Occasionally, someone will tell me "DON'T sell X-Plane until it is
PERFECT!"

Well, neither of these comments has any relevance here, as I have the
obligation to meet my contract and be on the shelves for Thanksgiving,
and so that is EXACTLY what I am going to do. The DVD is being burned
now! So step 1 is to NOT mess up the schedule. Thanksgiving can NOT be
moved.

2: Sep 2 is obvious: SOLVE THE MAC PROBLEMS! How? 2 simple ways:
->write our own DL-mamagers that take no moreRAM than Windows machines
->write our own texture compositors on the ATI/MAC combination that
work the same as the Nvidia/Windows combination

Step 2 is needed to get where we want to be on the Mac quickly, and so
it is, of course, just exactly what we will be doing over the coming
weeks and months. (How long will it take exactly? I don't know. All I
know for sure is we are working on it as fast as we can, regarding it
as critical stuff to address to be happy with the V-8 version on the
Mac)

3: Step 3 is also obvious: OFFER X-PLANE 8 WITH BOTH G-8 AND G-7
SCENERY, SO THAT YOU CAN HAVE SMOOTH AND FAST OR SLOWER-AND-DETAILED,
AT YOUR OPTION.
And that, as well, is, of course,  just exactly what we will do.

In the next several days, demos will be avail of the final X-Plane 8.00
BOTH WITH AND WITHOUT THE G-8 SCENERY. The installer on the DVD will
allow you to install EITHER OR BOTH SCENERY PACKAGES, AT YOUR OPTION,
so you can run "light and fast" or "heavy and detailed" at your option.
And yes, OBVIOUSLY, you can change your mind a million times, and
experiemnt with each option as many times as you like, re-installing a
million times if you like as you choose the best option for you and
your machine.

So, what is happening NOW is:

1: we are burning the DVD to meet outr IMMOVEBALE deasline
2: we are including the G7 AND G8 scenery o the DVD so you can try BOTH.
3: we are building a demo for each scenery type, so you can try BOTH
freely.
4: we are worrking on the Mac/ATI issues to make it just as good on the
Mac as on the Windows machines. When we do, we will drop the G7 scenery
from the installer.

OBVIOUSLY all of these things will happen EARLY in the V-8 run, all as
free upgrades to any V-8 purchase.

Now, I am sure a million people will offer advice, complaints, threats,
whines, new ideas, etc etc etc, but none of it will make any difference
on anything, and here is why:

We know EXACTLY what is not perfect.
We know ALMOST EXACTLY what to do about it. (you can't always be sure
about new tech)
We have EXACTLY the same goal as you. (hi detail without hurting
smoothness)
We have EXACTLY the same timetable goal as you. (AS SOON AS POSSIBLE)

So, I am getting back to work now. I plan to have:

X-Plane 762 RC-3
X-Plane 8.00 with G-7 scenery
X-Plane 8.00 with G-8 scenery
all up within 48 hours.

Those who just want speed and simplicity should get the V-8 G-7 demo
and choose that installer option if they buy the DVD.

Those who are ready to experiment with the leading edge should get the
V-8 G-8 demo and see how they like it!

OK X-Plane 8.01 final is here!
So here is the deal:

=>X-Plane 8.00 is at the factory now. It is a single DVD (packed to the
last meg with 4,700 meg of X-Plane 8.00 goodness!)

=>This DVD contains the Mac, Windows, AND LINUX flavors of X-Plane
8.00. Who-hoo!

=>Over the last 2 days as the DVD installer, etc, have been finalized,
I have developed X-Plane 8.01, with the option to use either
GENERATION-7 SCENERY FILES (lean, mean, fast, and clean) or
GENERATION-8 SCENERY FILES (big, detailed, and amazing, but stil not
polished)

=>X-Plane 8.01 demo is avail now at www.X-Plane.com

=>X-Plane 8.01  has support of version 7 aircraft, and version 8
aircraft.

=>X-Plane 8.01  has support of version 7 scenery, and version 8 scenery.

=>Because of the INSANE detail in the new scenery (just look at the
bottom of X-Plane.com to see a typical roadmap for a tiny little piece
of the world), AND the support for OLD scenery AND the support for OLD
planes, the demo size, is, well, frankly... HUGE. GIGANTIC. You cannot
support multiple generations of large, detailed files and still keep a
small download. I honestly do not see how anyone will be able to
download these files from a conventional server, because with
conventional servers, one single hiccup and the whole thing is GONE.
You just can't get a reliable download that way! Bit Torrent keeps
grabbing little pieces, though, until it has grabbed the whole thing...
much more robust!

=>I have set the price at $50... a little lower than planned because
the new scenery still needs some polish. I will raise the price once I
am 100% happy with the new scenery.

=>You do NOT need to worry about the big downloads too much though if
you buy the DVD, BECAUSE THE UPDATES TO THE DVD WILL BE PROVIDED WITH
AN UPDATER, AND THAT UPDATER WILL BE VERY SMALL BECAUSE IT WILL ONLY
INCLUDE THE FILES THAT HAVE CHANGED SINCE THE DVD WAS BURNED... and
when we do updated, typically only 10% or less of the files have been
changed... remember, the X-Plane program itself is TINY... an update
with just a new X-Plane is a TINY update.. .it is all the tons of
graphics and ENV files that take the space... most of them do NOT have
to change for most updates, so do NOT be afraid that you will have to
do many 300-meg downloads... YOU WON'T. If you cannot do the download,
just order the DVD, use X-Plane 7 until the DVD shows up, and then get
the updated to the DVD (WHICH WILL BE SMALL) when it comes out. Net
result: YOU HAVE TO DOWNLOAD ALMOST NOTHING! The demo is simply there
for people who cannot look at a fire hose without wondering what it
would be like to drink out of it at full blast. (people like me, for
example)

=>If you do download the demo, THE BETA CD =>WILL<= UNLOCK IT FROM DEMO
MODE, so you can fly forever with it, if you like. You have been able
to order beta CD's for some time now, and can order the FINAL DVD now.

=>X-Plane 8.00 will NOT be available by CD... EVER!!!!!!!! It is 4.7
GIG already! And that is with detailed scenery for USA only! We are
just getting warmed up and already FILLING a DVD!

=>The X-Plane 8.01, for Macintosh, when using Generation-8 scenery,
does NOT draw TERRAIN on the MAPS. We are of course working on this
now.

=>SOME of the objects do NOT yet have roof textures.  We are of course
working on this now.

=>If you have the hardware and you fly to KSAN with Generation-8
scenery enabled and  the objects and roads are cranked to INSANE, you
will notice incredible things like thousands of buildings at irregular
angles and shapes TO ACTUALLY MATCH THE STREETS, with wedge-shaped
building on wedge-shaped street blocks, and other incredible scenery
details that are available NATION-WIDE. This begins to show the huge
power of the new scenery, but a lot of polish is needed before I am
really happy with it! But, of course, we are working at 100% here and
will have many updates coming out! (Again, if you have a DVD, thr
updates wil be SMALL, since they wil lsimply update the files on the
DVD... if you do NOT buy a DVD and get the full DEMO, then the
downloads will be HUGE, as long as we support both the NEW AND THE OLD
formats).

FATE FAVORS THE BOLD, SO HAVE AT IT!

As the plane took off, the pilot turned to the co-pilot and said, “Have you ever flown solo?” Co-pilot: No. Typically I fly much higher than this.

quand je vous dis qu'il bosse sans arrêt...
mail du matin:

X-Plane 8.02 is in the works now.
I plan release for on or about November 24 so you can download then and
play on turkey day after lunch.

Our TOP prios are obvious:

->faster load time
->faster frame-rate
->better looking terrain and objects

Ben is working on the first 2.
Sergio is workin on the last one.

What am I doing?
The usual... whatever people ask for.
Here is what is done so far, with more to come of course:

See the rendering options screen: there is an option to mostly flatten
the airports.
Flatten them out a good bit if you see fit... you still get SOME curves
in the runway, but not too much.

GPS refinement:
GPS can work independently until you actually enter a plan into the
FMS... then the FMS takes over the GPS.

Engine nacelle left/right texture s/t labels in Plane-Maker are correct.

Custom limits for round AOA! Jason Chandler needs it for one of his
next planes... a LearJet!
Well known to be among the most overpowered and challenging civilian
planes to fly, this one should be interesting!

Hydraulic quantity and pressure gages as well, as requested.

3-D cockpits functionsl no matter what resolution you are running the
sim in.

Ctrl-o goes SMOOTHLY from 2-d to 3-d cockpit. It was a little
distracting before.

Reverse-thrust-engaged annunciators. kind of nice. some airline pilot
wanted them.
New joystick button option: AUTOPILOT: CWS (for control-wheel
steering)Hit this and...
NOTHING HAPPENS! (except the DISCONNECT of any pitch and heading
autopilot functions)
but then, RELEASE the button, and the pitch and heading at the moment
you released the button are held...
be sure your plane has a PITCH SYNC and HEADING HOLD button to see the
annunciators and know what is going on,
and so you can hit them to turn this mode OFF!

More accuracy with prop-strikes... the elevation of the gorrund or
pavement right under the prop is considered,
not just the general ground altitude in the "vicinity" of the plane.

Better ITT & EGT during trubine engine starts...
the temperature is hooked to the start fuel intro time as defined in
Plane-Maker engine screen.

Change the size of the EFIS and HUD ALTITUDE and AIRSPEED layer-3
images to define the size of the instruments in the panel,
if desired. You can also change their size the easy way (instrument
size ration in Plane-Maker), but that method results in
blurriness, and is not optimal.
