Bonjour,

Merci d'avance ;)

 Jumper Setting
 ==============

Verify that the jumpers on the intelligent storage peripheral's J8
connector are properly installed to match your configuration choices.

 J8  Physical/Translate Mode Configuration
 -----------------------------------------

  Physical Mode  Translate Mode
     +5-3-1+       +5-3-1+
     |o o X|       |o o o|
     |o o X|       |o o o|
     +6-4-2+       +6-4-2+

 Physical Mode vs. Translate Mode:
The physical mode presents the intelligent storage peripheral's
actual physical parameters to the system. If your version of DOS
only recognizes 17 sectors per track, use the translate mode jumper
 configuration (no jumper installed).

 J8  IRQ5/IRQ2 Configuration
 ---------------------------

  IRQ5 (Default)    IRQ2
+5-3-1+       +5-3-1+ Note: The control processor firmware sets
     |o o o|       |X o o| the configuration register (host port 322)
     |o o o|       |X o o| according to the interrupt selection
+6-4-2+       +6-4-2+ indicated, but the jumper selection does
not physically select the interrupt level.
The actual selection of the interrupt is
done on the adapter card or on the mother-
                           board.

IRQ5 is the default priority interrupt level. If you need to select
IRQ2, place a jumper on pins 5-6 of J8 connector. The mechanical
connection to the host interface connector (pin 31) accomplishes
this. Bit 6 of the configuration register (host port 322) is set to
 according to the jumper selection.

 J8  Optional DMA Demand Mode
 ----------------------------
+5-3-1+ Note: Western Digital's Super BIOS version 2.1 or greater
   |o X o| can program the controller for DMA demand mode.
   |o X o|
   +6-4-2+

To select the controller DMA demand mode, jumper pins 3-4 of J8. This
mode improves the data transfer rate and overall system performance.
This option is only valid for systems that have a BIOS or operating
system that can program the DMA controller in the demand mode and
sense the mode selection "handshake" function. The DMA demand mode
offers a sector interleave of 2:1 instead of the standard 3:1 inter-
 leave.

The intelligent storage pheriperal can be mounted in many different
ways depending upon the physical design of your system. After
securely mounting the intelligent storage peripheral, verify that
nothing interferes with the free movement of its shock mounts.
Mount the intelligent storage peripheral to the chassis using four
 6-32 screws.

 WARNING
The only electrical ground contact should be from the mounting
bracket to the frame on the host system. Do not ground to the
casting. Screws which are too long will cause a ground loop to the
intelligent storage peripheral and defeat the shock mounting or
possibly damage board components. The screw should engage no more
 than six threads (3/16 inch).

 Interface Cable
 ---------------
The interface cable should be kept as short as possible to minimize
noise which is induced on the data and control buses. Western
Digital recommendes an "untwisted" cable no longer than 18 inches. If
your installation requires a longer cable, then use a buffered cable
to minimize the introduction of noise from the host system into the
I/O channel. Noise may cause erratic operation of the host system.

 WARNING
Damage to the intelligent storage peripheral may occur if the inter-
face cable is attached incorrectly. To prevent an incorrect
connection, make certain you are using an interface cable which has
been keyed at both the drive and host ends. The female connector on
the interface cable will have a plug in position 20 to prevent in-
 correct connection.

 Dual Installation
 -----------------
Dual XT installations require that you install a Western Digital
adapter card. The WDXT-140 supports two intelligent storage
 peripherals. If you are adding a WD93024-X, 34-X or 44-X as a
secondary peripheral in an XT system, use the WDXT-150 adapter card
which has jumper selectable addressing. Do not daisy chain the
peripherals. Each peripheral will have its own adapter/controller
card. The primary peripheral is selected at port address 320H: the
secondary peripheral is selected at port address 324H. Please refer
to your adapter card manual and to the installation.

If the intelligent storage peripheral is being installed in an AT
system as secondary drive, the AT drive and Western Digital's
intelligent storage peripheral will each have their own adapter/
controller cards. The Western Digital peripheral requires an XT150
adapter card jumpered for port 324H. Do NOT identify the Western
Digital peripheral in the AT setup program.

If you only have one internal power connector, you will require a
Y-adapter to provide power to both units. If your system does not
provide a power connector, install an XT150 adapter board.

 LED
 ---
If your system has an activity LED cable, plug it into J6 on the
 intelligent storage peripheral.

 Head Parking
 ------------
It is becomes necessary to move your computer system, park the heads
first at physical cylinder 862. Parking the heads moves the heads to
a safe, non-data landing zone. This helps protect the media and the
heads from accidental damage due to vibration, moving or shipping.
Consult your DOS manual. If your vision of DOS does not provide a
head parking command, there are a number of utility programs that can
provide this feature. Western Digital offers a parking routine called
 PARKIDE.

 Connectors
 ----------
 Power Connector         4 Pin (WD40-001114-000)
Interface Connector     2x20 pin RA (WD41-001062-000), pin 20 keyed
Interface Cable         40 Conductor Ribbon - 18 Inches Maximum

WESTERN  WD93024/93034/93044-X  TECHNICAL REFERENCE MANUAL 0098S 10/89

 General Description
 ===================
Western Digital's family of intelligent storage peripherals provides
a choice of data storage capacities for the IBM PC/XT and
compatibles. Because of their small size, the WD93024-X, WD93034-X,
and WD93044-X are easily incorporated into systems with limited
space. They can also be used as secondary storage peripherals in AT
 systems.

 Models WD93024-X, WD93034-X, and WD93044-X offer 20, 30, and 40 mega-
bytes of storage, respectively, in a 3.5 inch form factor. These
intelligent storage peripherals are also available in 5.25 inch
 frames (WD95024-X, WD95034-X, and WD95044-X).

Bezel and LED indicator options are available. Contact your Western
Digital representative for the part number required for your
 configuration.

 Seek Time
 ---------
       +----------------------------------+--------+
       |Track-to-Track         msec. typ. |   5    |
       +----------------------------------+--------+
       |Average                msec. typ. |  39    |
       |                       msec. max. |  63    |
       +----------------------------------+--------+
       |Latency                msec. avg. |   9    |
       +----------------------------------+--------+

 Low-Level Formatting
 --------------------
You do not need to perform a low-level format. Western Digital's
intelligent storage peripheral has already been preformatted at the
factory. The bad track information listed on the top of the drive
will be mapped out when you use the DOS FORMAT utility. If you ever
find it necessary to reformat, use Western Digital's IDE SuperBIOS
program. This program also allows the user to enter defect
information and to create two virtual partitions.

 Translation
 -----------
The intelligent storage peripheral provides two modes, physical or
translate, for data storage and retrieval. The physical mode supports
the actual physical parameters of the drive (2 or 4 heads, 27 sectors
per track, and 782 cylinders). Translate mode for the WD93024-X
supports 4 heads, 17 sectors per track, and 615 cylinders. For the
WD93034 6 heads, 615 cylinders and 17 sectors per track. For the
WD93044-X supports 5 heads, 17 sectors per track, and 977 cylinders.

Physical or translate mode is invoked via jumper J8 1-2. Physical
mode provides the optimum usage of disk storage capacity since every
physical storage sector on the disk is available to the user. How-
ever, many older operating systems cannot accomodate the storage
capacity of the intelligent storage peripheral. The translate mode
accommodates those operating systems which do not recognize 27
 sectors per track (SPT).

 Preventive Maintenance
 ----------------------
No preventive maintenance is required for the WD93024-X, WD93034-X,
 and WD93044-X.
